We went on warily, then sud- denly we realised that the up- grade was becoming steep. I trod on the gas and held tight to the wheel. Another fifty yards, and I was fearful that the front wheel would leave the ground, There was a corner, and beyond

that the hill really began. It simply went straight into the air, and approaching it one look- ed at the water-wished face of the road as one looks at a house. side. I dared not stop, and Jock's pose was against the windscreen as he clung to the dash. I heard him pant:

"Dinna look ahint ge, sir! Dinns look ahint!”

That, of course, made me want to look behind. I stole a furtive glance, and shall ever remember it in my nightmares. There was nothing behind us, save a sheer two thousand feet of cloud-wrea- thed, giddy space to the bottom of the glen!.

I was, no doubt that terrible backward glance which proved our undoing, for next moment we Imed the heather bank. The front wheels reared into the air, and the car simply sat down on her luggage gird end, the front wheels still revolving in thin air, while Jock disappeared with groan into the luggage at the back.

Gingerly I opened the door and lowered myself to the ground. Peering into the back I saw Jock In a sitting position, save that his hill boots were pointing skywards. He was coolly examining his watch, which he held in the palm

INTERNATIONAL "AIR FORCE

Support From The United States

BRITAIN AND GOLD

In an article published to-day by l'Agence Economique et Financiere M. Paul Raynaud, a former Minis- ter of Finance, declares that an early stabilization of the dollar and the pound is necessary if the franc is to avoid the dangers besetting it, and urges that an agreement between France and the- United States should be sought as a preliminary to securing British consent to the stabilization of the pound.

Discussing the present British attitude towards stabilization, he points out that there is a perfectly legitimate desire across the Channel to ensure that both the dollar and the gold standard currencies are likely to remain firm before once more linking the pound to gold. The British, he says, are clawing up their financial sails in a way which foretells a financial storm, and he expresses the opinion that it is the duty of the countries still. oa gold to avert the storm by timely action. Nothing can done with Great Britain, he con- cludes, until the stability of the dollar has been assured, and an attempt to secure American consent to the stabilization of the dollar ought to be made immediately.

THE CAMERONS ON GUARD

be

A crowd of more than 2,000 people watched the 2nd Battalion Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders take over the duty of guarding the royal palaces in London on Satur day. It is the first time for twenty-five years that this duty has been entrusted to a kilted regl

ment...

It was a striking spectacle as the Camerons, heralded by bagpipes and drums, marched · through Marlborough Gate, the red and green tartan kilts swinging in time, white spattees gleaming in the sun, and the green and red regi- niental "colours ribbons fluttering |from the bagpipes. Awaiting them were the Scots Guards in scaret tunics, black busbies, and blue trousers While the officers of the old guard were explaining their duties to the officers of their successors, the two colours-the Guards' colours of dark blue and the Camerons enblazoned with the regimental battle honours were marched up and down by the Mr. Clark Howell, chairman of two colour ensigns. The Camerons the United States Federal Avia-band played lively airs while the tion Commission, interviewed by two guards marched and counter- Reuter, on his arrival in London marched in the square of t yesterday, said that he believed in James's Palace.
