THE GERMAN PRESIDENT

During the week, the German community in common with Ger- mans all over the world held a ser- vice in memory of their late Pre- sident von Hindenburg. There can be no quarrelling about the fact that Hindenburg, was among the greatest ngures to emerge from the War. What Germany owes him has been amply stated in the obituary reports and in the ser- vices held. The attendance" at the special church service in Hong Kong demonstrated in no uncertain manner the esteem in which the late President was held." The Ro- tary Club, one of the most inter- national organisations in Hong- Kong added its humble tributa and I thought the words which fell from Mr. M. K. GANG FIGHTS

Hong Kong, generally speaking, is to-day

one of the best ordered cities in the East and serious crime is comparatively scarce. Of late, however, gang fights are becoming more frequent and it hoped that the authorities will lose no time in putting & stop to this form of settling disputes. In a recent case in the city, choppers and bamboo poles were used and this sort of thing might quite easily lead to serious resuls, though fortunately in the instance referred to, no very serious injuries were caused. The nuisance appear to be growing and should be nipped in the bud.

The recommendation by the jury that the "life guards" at the South China Bathing Club's pavilion at North Point should have shorter hours than 7 p.m. until 10.30 at night is one which should be seri- ously considered. There are large number of bathers who visit the North Point beaches early in the morning and an equally large large number who swim right up to 10 or 11 p.m. at night. When nothing happens the work of the "guards" appear to be quite easy

they have nothing to do, but all the same, the jury is right in their recommendation, for a per- son can hardly be expected to be wideawake over such long hours as stated above.

Premises Of The China Can Co.

Considerable excitement WAS caused in Kennedy Town just be- fare eight o'clock last night when, an outbreak of Are accurred at the premises of the China Can Com- pany's Factory.

The fire threatened at one stage to develop into a huge confäär- Hon, but thanks to a timely mess- Bge to the Kennedy Fire Station an appliance was quickly on, the scene to be followed by more ap-" pliances from the Central Fire Station and further machines from the Wanchal station.

The Bremen set about their work in a thorough going manner and before very long the blaze was quelled. The China Can Company's factory is quite close to other buildings, but

once the firemen were on, the scene there was little danger of the fire spreading.

An examination of the place after the fire had been subdued showed that lithographic room of the factory suffered the beavlest damage.

The fire-fighting operations yes--| terday were under the charge of Mr. J. C. Fitz-Henry.

Farewell To M. Dufaure De La Prade

There was a large and representative gathering at the Jacobean Room of the Hong Kong Hotel yesterday when the many friends of M. Dufaure de La Prade gathered to say farewell to the popular French Consul who will be leaving the Colony on Tuesday next.
