Von Papen's Appointment

:|

(Special to "Hong Kong."

Daily Press")"

(By Telegraph Copyright, Tela- graphic Messager Ordinance, 1895. Received, July 28, 1:30 p.m.)

London, July 28. The British Press comments this | morning on von Papen's appoint- ment forms a striking contrast to the attitude of the Italian papers which continue their hostility to Germany.

The "Daily Mall" welcomes Hit- „ler's decision as an important step and as a clear proof that Hitler' will offer no interference in the Austrian domestic affairs.

The "Dally Telegraph is pleased at the general readiness of Ger- many to adhere at the view that for the time being and in the ab- acrice of any proof of direct official participation of Germany, no dip- tomatic action is necessary in Ber- Hin. Papen's despatch to Vienna is a proof of Hitler's foresight which must be admired, conclud- ed the paper.

The "Morning Post" diplomatic correspondent who is well known in British political circles, does not a5 2 view Papen's appointment token of a change in the German polley towards Austria but merely as a change of methods at best,- Transocean Euo Min.

Paris July 23. The French Press continues to discuss exhaustively every aspect of the situation created by the events in Vienna and the nomina- tion of von Papan to be envoy ex- traordinary of the Reichlin Vienna.

The Temps" states the opinion that the future of Franco-German relationships will depend on the recognition of Austria's indepen- dence and the development of af- fairs in Austria,

41.

"Notre Temps" considers it possi- in consequence of the ble that events in Austria, Franco-Italian rapprochement will proceed at a more rapid rate than expected, and that it is most likely that Barthou's visit to Rome will take place earlier than Iormerly scheduled.-
