Some Axioms Of Dress
(Special Air Mail Service)
London, July 4,
By midsummer certam axioms of dress have become formulated, and those who attend to them are sure at least of feeling in the movement." One axiom is the linen tweed. From the pre- valence of the men tweed, it may be deduced that material is as important as ever in the dress scheme. The linen tweed is sometimes used only for skirts, sometimes fór sults, and occa- sionally for whole dresses, Char- ming colours can be obtained. each as various odd greens.. tur- qualse, various whites. Made up, looks like a loosely the tweed woven wool. It is alleged not to crush at all This is not strictly true, but it shakes out again, Linen tweed-dresses usually have the simplest possible lines, since the interest les so much in the stuff itself. A cowl neck, a wide belt with a buckle, made of the mate- rial, some cutting about the hips,
such as this in greater or less degree. Sometimes the fullriess begins lower down. In evening frocks on the other hand, a large long sporran of pleats is often let In at the back. This is to com- pensate for the train which is not there, and it has actually something of the suggestion of a train. Necks have cowls like that of the model, but they are also" low, and the cowl sticks out well In front, almost like that which used to be worn at the back. Dresses are made with the, ut- most platiness in a number of light colours with a large coul
belt, and then merely With bodice and skirt. Here Itting and there cowls are seen both back and front. "This 19"espect- ally the case with evening frocks.
Д
The loose coat was bound to prosper because it was" so.. con- venient, but it has also prospered of the because of the warmth
and the whole. cut on the cross.season. Some of the really short
is usually the recipe. Tweed suits have short, fitting Ettle coats, sometimes belted, sometimes with
a kick round the wais times with a plaid desig enables them to be cut ornamentation whatever."
The Chanet Model
10- eh
The crepe-de-Chine or moro- cain dress and coat is almost as Important as the tweed, and its smartness depends greatly on its to pattern. Stuff designs run fringes and cloudly markings and zigzag lines. These arrangements. or shadings almost, forma con- trast to the floral designs: be- tween the two there le semi-con- ventional patterns a display of rockets, white on a black ground- perhaps, with minute touches of vivid green. The Chanel, model in brown and white is a good Illustration of the reticent type of marocain. Here the pattern is used entirely to trim the dress, while a high, small cowl neck gives it a good deal of character. This dress suitable for numerous occasions. Marocain dresses: ; ATB made with long sleeves and. short. The long sleeves are often bishop in shape and ran fato a Ragin shoulder. Or they may be four fiths length and let into the shoulders with tree or four, deep pleats. The short sleeves usually. depend on the coat. Where this has sleeves they may be man-xx- Istent, or the length of the mo del. **

The fea of mak: Ing Woollen stads open in weave is sometimes carried still farther. Tall people may have a woollen coat which is deliberately open- worked to form a sort of yoke. while the same method is used to vary its lower edge.
Grey or Green
The woollen 'sult almost every- where runs to grey or green, and there are more greys than greens. In every case the Attings are elther grey to match for grein. as the case may be), or, they are white in a material which looks dazzling and deep-toned as well. A grey dress, for instance, may be worn with a sort of Portia beret and with a short white square yoke fastened at the top with a large white bowy: Puritan colfárs and curd rather exag- gerated, are tied on both suits and dresses, and sometimes ̧ ́are slightly stiffened. ORANGE COLOURED ORGANDIE
Lane Crawford's are selling some of their very smart evening dresses in washable slik at reduced prices. These dresses were originally mark- ed at $29.50 but they are going us cheap as $19.75. There was a very pretty embroided.orange coloured organdle with the wide circle skirt `and puff sleeves. Another model was in a black slik slip arrange- ment with an organdie, blouse, in three shades. It was such a pretty gown that several shoppers. wno happened to be in the store at the same time as the writer could hardly take their eyes off K
