Decline For The First

Half-Year

The Statistical Office of theImports and Exports Department repons that, la terms of Hong Kong currency, the trade of the Colony declined during the first half year of 1934, as compared with the corresponding period of 1933; imports being less by 24.5 per cent., and exporis less by 39.3 per cent.

"In the first half year of 1934 imports were declared at wi value of $195.5 millions (£142 millions), as compared with $259.7 militons (£17.0 millions), in the first half year of 1985; exports totalled $157.1 millions (£11.4 millions), as against $211.6, militons (£13.9 millons). "

Comparative statistles show that Japan, China and the Netherlands East Indies increased their shares of the Imports into the Colony, while Great Britain, U.S.A. French Indo-China, Slam, Germany, British Malaya, India, Australia and Belgium recorded decreases.-

The Japanese share of the to-al'import trade alinost doubled: in the first balf year of 1933 it amounted to 44 percent, and in the firs half year of 1934 to 8.0 per cent,

The Piece Goods Imports trade declined from $36.4 millions in the first half year of 1933 to $28.8 millions, in the first half year of 1934, the share of the United Kingdom falling from 28.4 per cent. (510.3 milllans), to.. 11.5 per cent. ($4.2 millions); while the share of Japan increased from 8.0 per cent. ($2.9 millions) to 15.4 per cent. ($4.4 millions). The North China share of this trade has steadily increased from 22.0 per cent. in the first yeAT of 1931 to 29.3 per cent, in 1992, 16.9 per cent, in 1933 and 52.9 per cent. In 1934,
