Shefield manufacturers are us- ing more coke-oven gas' for the heat-treatment of steel The practice is on a scale comparable with the schemes operating in the Ruhr. "One of the city's larg- est steel-producing arms is con- suming gas transmitted from coke-ovens three miles away. The Arm state that the use of this gas at high pressure has led in every case to a considerable re- duction in the amount of scaling of the steel. "As a result of the high calorific value of

the gas, heating up is very rapid: there are no delays occasioned through "waiting for heat." Increased -outputs have been obtained int consequence, with relatively decreased

As compared with other works where "coal or producer gas is employed for the same purpose, it has been found that all the operationS

can be carried out with a greater degree of precision, and the heat con- sumption per ton of finished pro- duct has been considerably de- creased. There is practically no wastage of, fuel, an no transport costs for solid "fuel elther to, or within, the works. It is estimat- ed that the potential consump- tion of coke oven gas in iron and steel works in the Shemeld area is about 23,500.c00,000.cub, f2.

То еп- able pulleys with arms so loosen- ed to be rapidly made good Messrs. Victory Pulley Supply Depot, 10, Wool-street, Oldham. have brought out a device which they have named "The New-Way Pulley Repairer.” This consists of a yoke-shaped iron fitting which is inserted on the under- side of the rim and embraces the loose ärm, "The central portion is formed with a boss in which are two set-screws set radially to the arm. The ends of the yoke are attached to the rim either by countersunk rivets or bolts and the set-screws are then tightened up on the arm. It is claimed that this device, which can be fitted without removing the pulley from its shaft, not only secures the arm firmly, but makes the pulley stronger than it originally was, whilst not destroying its circular- ity... A subsidiary use is that of enabling a pulley to transmit in- creased horse-power by Atting a yoke piece to each arm.
