COLOMBO SURPRISE AT ASCOT

Beaten At Five To One On. By Flamenco

(Special Air Mail Service)

-Londen, June 20.

The first day of Ascot had its sensational feature, perhaps more so than in any average year. There was the defeat in the seventh and concluding race of Colombo, the horse that needs no introduction to readers, writes a correspondent. At 5 to 1 on he could not beat Lord Rosebery's Flamenco, whose art ing price was 100 to 0.

Their Majesties the King and Queen purposely "waited Colombo's race. As a rule they leave the Royal Enclosure before

the last race.

The first of the handicaps, the Ascot Stakes, had an astounding result when won by the 25 to 2 chance, Hands Off, with all the Another fancied horses 'routed, outsider to score was Duplicate, who for Sir Charles Byde, won The Gold Vase. The two-year- olds were staunch in the sense that the winners of the Coven- try Stakes and Queen Mary Stakes were great public fancies.

To-day prudent backers will play lightly where the Royal Hunt Cup is concerned. The maker of the handicap, Mr. Arthur Fawcett, is as much battled as most of us to find the winner of the problem which he created.

My own view is that if I had to make a backing book I would have to support at the right prices about a dozen horses and then, perhaps experience the devasta- ting sensation of having missed the winner..

We know the much esteemed ones are Alluvial, who may have no more out-and-out admirer than his jockey. Carslake; Cotoneaster, notwithstanding the long odds

Mr. Fawcett obviously thinks a lot of Light Sussex, and may not think he has given him too much weight. It is a question, whether Lo take the Victoria Cup form, or that for the Jubilee Handicap. the latter, then Cotoneaster and Solfatare are not out of it, though Solfatara has been allowed 8lb which should from Cotoneaster; bring them very close together.

The Victoria Cup form brings in and Alluvial, Commander III. Fonnb. The last named must have a" charce of beating Alluvial though it is fairly certain that Mr. Joel's "horse has bever beer as good as this year. Commander III. was nearly brought down in the race at Hurst Park, notwith standing which he ran on to fill third place.

On the Arst day of fat racing this year horses named Hands Of and Penny-a-Liner" finished third and second respectively for a mile handicap Hands Off was then giving lab. Now, giving only alb, he not only beat Penny-a-Liner, but he won the Ascot Stakes at 25 to 1. The other was second. Who could have foreseen such a thing as this on that first day at Lin coin? One never heard the name of either mentioned, certainly not stopped horses winning before to day, and, of course, it never will

do.

Hands Of was always either second. When he was first or second he was being led by Mel- drum. At the other end of the feld were the well- strung-out
