Montreal ban pit. He had walked along a carapet within the encolsure when New York one of the animals sprang at him. Oslo attempting to drag him down.

At first the beast clawed the man by the left arm. Then it grabbed him by a foot, pulling off one of his boots.

The visitor whose hat had been 1ost attempted to hold Stenson, who, however, nitimately fell into the pit.

Two of the four lions then drag- ked him across the enclosure, a distance of thirty or forty yards to a bush.

Keepers with poles attempted to beat off the beasts, and a number of blank cartridges were tired. Ultimately the animals were caged, Stenson was found to be dead. He had been injured, probably rendered asensible, by his fall on to the concrete floor of the pit and had been badly mauled by the animals.

The lions had been fed only shortly before the incident.

Attempted Rescue

It was the hat belonging to Mr. Horace Myhill, a visitor from Lon- don, whose loss led to the tragedy. shown being Mr. Myhill was around by Stenson.

Mr.. Myhill said to-night; "I cannot say much about it All I know is that my hat, for some unknown cause, fell into the arena as I was speaking to Stanley Stenson, who at once volunteered to go down into the pit and re- cover it.

JAPANESE COTTON SARONG TRADE

Singapore June 22.

Indian, sarong manufacturers can afford to smile at the in- troduction of the foreign "textiles quotas.

Japan's cotton sarong trade in this market, built up from 1,005 sarongs Worth Ittle more than $500, in 1929 to 5,751,000 sarongs, worth 92,088,000 in 1933, has been whittled down to a mere 24.000 sarongs for the quota period. Tremendous increase In Japan's trade in cotton sarongs has only taken place in the past two years, reducing Indian imports during the period from 4,024,000 sarongs in 1927 to 1.287,600 in 1933, and the Netherlands Indian share of the market from 4,322,000 to 1,807,000.

This is the most striking example of the effect the quotas will have upon Japan's share of the Malayan piece goods market. Two important developments are expected as a result of the publication of the quotas

One is that soon the quotas will embrace textile "lines" other than the seven already enumerated.

Japan's Quotas Already Nearly Filled. "By this time the alarm bad Merchants estimate, meanwhile been raised, and the keepers came that Japan will all in a matter along and endeavoured to beat of weeks the quotas allowed for

"It wasn't until a number of keepers and other employees of the Zoo beat the ons back that poor Stenson was able to be drag- ged from the arena. He was ter- ribly mauled.'

Expectations upon the second development are based on the ex- tent of Japanese imports of textile into Malaya during 1933 and, the fact that imports this year have shown a steady increase.

Japan is allowed to import into Malaya for local consumption from May 7, to Dec, 31, this year the
