ELECTRICITY IN SCOTLAND READY
AGRICULTURE
More Might Be
: Done
In view of the efficiency of the electric motor, it is unfortunate that its application to farming, operations is at present hamper- ed by difficulties of energy sup- ply. Although several branches of agriculture, such as poultry farming and market gardening. show a tendency to move towards urban centres, and thus to bring themselves into areas served by existing electric-distribution sys- tems, the main work of the far- mer must always be located in the open country, where, as yet, no mains have been laid. This. as the Reports of the Electricity Commissioners show. is, however, a matter which is received close attention; and the results already obtained in the Bedford and Nor- wich demonstration areas are sufficient to indicate that it should be possible to supply far- mers with electricity at a rate sufficiently low to render its em- "ployment economically attrac- tive. In the meantime, in view of the advantages that the elect- ric drive undoubtedly ders, it seems surprising that there are so few cases of farmers generat- ing their own electric supply, as this can be done very economic- ally if the load does not exceed that required for lighting and driving one..or two motors coup- led to pumps or barn machinery,
We are inclined to think that more might be done in this dir- ection, especially as plenty of sultable equipment is available for the purpose. In installing such plant, care should be taken to see that it complies with the usual standards of safety, voltage and frequency, so that advant- age may be taken of the public supply when it, in due course, becomes available. The driving of subsidiary apparatus, however, is relatively a minor matter, and the real problem will always be in the application of electric po- wer, to deld operations. Assuming that the farmer is fortunate en- ough to be within reach of the grld the opportunity presents it- self of careylo ng heavy field. work, such as ploughing, either electric self-contained by a plough with a trailing cable, or by means of electric winding en- gines. Either method involves wiring of a more or less tempor- ary nature to carry the supply from the tapping point to the ftelds, representing a very ap- preclable addition to the cost, and the possibility of trouble with the Board of Trade. There
are obvious objections to a trail- ing cable in this class of work. and it appears probable that any electric future development of ploughing will be along the lines of the winding engine. This met- hod has met with some success abroad, but is greatly handicap- ped in this country by the size
and contour of the fields on the
average farm.

WATER POWER IN SWEDEN
Those who have followed the development of hydro-electric` power in Sweden will not need to be informed of the great part in it played by the Royal Board of waterfalls, which, as a Govern- ment Department, has not only nad control of water rights and other legal matters, but has itself bufit and operated a number of large-capacity stations. Its capit
latter activity amounts to £18,171,- 808 at par, and on it a return of 51 per cent. has been earned in recent years. On the other hand. its operations seem to have suf- fed from an undue amount of Government control, for at ceremony recently he in Stock- holm, to celebrate the Fenty-Afth anniversary of its foundation, the Director-General (Mr. Malm) re- ferred to a proposal that the Board should be formed into a joint stock manopoly company on the lines of those. operating in the tobacco and wine trades.
