Powerful Motor Drifter

The most-powerful motor drif- ter to be built zo date, the Girl Helen, underwent her trials on March 5 last in the Moray Firth A morning trip was made from Buckle to Lossiemouth, and the return journey was made in the afternoon. The total distance covered, was 'about 38 miles, and a speed of 1 knots was attained with the engine running at its normal power. The trails were in every way satisfactory. The 'vessel has "been 'bullt by Messrs. Thomson and Ste-

Buckic, to wart. of

the order of Mr. James Fleft. of She is of wood with Findochty. an 80-ft, keel, the beam being 18 ft. "and the depth 9 ft 9in. The main engine'is a.six-cylin- - der model constructed by Messrs. The National Gus and Oil En- gine Company. Limited, and develops 220 brake horse,

An un- usual feature of the vessel is that instead of the usual reversible engine, the National oll-operated and reduction -reverse

gear is Acted. The engine is of very compact design, and an import- ant feature is the ease with

which the valves may be removed. It is not necessary to disturb the cylinder head, nor to break any pipe connections, and the whole operation can be complet-. ed in a few minutes. The en- gine is designed for use with average-quality Diesel oll, the guaranteed consumption at rat- ed load being 0.42 lb. per brake horse-power/hour. The all-oper- ated gear-box is claimed to have many advantages over the nor- mal type of gear, the chief be ing that it is extremely compact and therefore occupies very little space. It is certain in action, and is capable of running for almost indefinite periods without adjust- ment. Another feature of im- portance is the case of operation. reversal being effected from the wheelhouse by means of a 3-in. lever, which can, if desired, be operated with one finger.

Self-Priming Pump

The main engine is started by means of a National 181-brake horse-pawer, twin-cylinder hea vy-oil engine, thus eliminating al need for compressed air. The auxillary engine is also arranged

so that it can draw either from the sea to give a deck supply for washing purposes, or deal with bilge water in the fish hold and pump this overboard. The main engine is fitted both with circulating water and blige pumps, the latter being so 27- ranged that it can be thrown out of action when not required. The connections of the auxiliary en-- giné general service pump are so arranged that, in an emergency, this pump can be employed to - provide the circulating water through the matn engine. While this amount of water would not be sufficient for allowing the main engine to run at full po- wer, it would, nevertheless, en- able the boat to proceed at half- Speed" In addition, the use of this pump enables the jackets on the main engine to be led before the engine is started up and also facilitates the discharge, of water through the Jackets for after-cooling when the main en- " gine has been shut down. - An electrical installation is Btted. the generator being driven off the main engine, and batteries are provided so that sumclent light- ing will be available when the boat is in harbour.

The four main fuel tanks in the engine-room have a total cap- acity of 5 tons, a service tank of 45 gallons capacity being install ed. The lubricating-oil tank in the engine-room has a capacity of 50 gallons! The exhausts from both the main, and auxiliary engines are led into the funnel, in which a silencer is embodied...

AN ALTERNATIVE AIR

ATOM

As our understanding of the internal architecture

the of atoms which compose all matter, the planetary system known as the Rutherford-Bohr, atom has been accepted for upwards of twenty years. The explanation" of all properties of matter, so far as these can be traced as resid- ing in the atom itself, has; s. a matter of course, been sought in the mechanles of this parti÷ cular planetary system of protons and electrons. The complete concordance of the Rutherford- Bohr atom with most physical phenomena has certainly appear- ed to justify such confidence, and the fact that the solution of certain problems in terms of its structure has involved highly in- tricate mathematical demonstra- tion has quite reasonably been regarded merely as indicating, that Nature in her fundamentals borders on the incomprehensible. Its fallure, far, to provide an adequate explanation of certain phenomena like electrical con- duction, and the existence DI anomalies in the case of others, may similarly be regarded as due to our incomplete understanding of the facts. These anomalies, it may be hoped, will be rectified by advancing knowledge.

It is in these circumstances that we find in a book just published. a quite new type of atom being propounded. Ordi- narlly, we should be inclined to dismiss any such porposal us something more than revolution- ary, if such a word may be used in a scientific connection. There' are, however, what appear to be serious grounds for consideration of the form of atom which Dr. Tutin, its originator, designates "The Alternative Atom."

CONDITION ING IN INDUSTRY

It is perhaps rather surprising, bearing in mind the importance of air conditioning in the textile, food and other industries, that the first conference and exhibi-" tlon to be devoted to this subject has only just been held. The conference and exhibition were organised by the Chemical. En... gineering Group of the Society" of Chemical Industry, in con- junction with the Food Group and Yorkshire Section (of the Society, and both were held at the Queen's Hotel, in Leeds, on Friday, April 8. Some 200 repre- sentatives of science and industry attended the conference, among the former being Dr. Ezer Ori- mths, F.R.S., who described re- cent work in hygrometry, and Dr. G. M. Marsh, who stated, in a paper on "Air Conditioning in

of L Industry," that the lack satisfactory hygrometer was large ly responsible for the neglect of humidity problems in many in- dustries. He also discussed hu- midity control. A general dia- cussion followed an informal din- ner, the discussion being opened by Dr. S. G. Barker, who called attention to the importance of the position of a building relative- ly to the wind and sun, and men--- ttoned the case of a particular factory building having most of the glass on the north side, in which the difference in humidity between one side and the other was 40 per cent. The importance of air conditioning in connection with the manufacture of photo- graphic materials was..dealt with by Mr. C. N. Potter, and Mr. Da- vidson, referring to the same in- dustry, said he had found a com- petent workman quite capable of. taking readings from a wet-and- dry bulb thermometer, At the exhibition, some 25 Arms represented. In addition to the Wool Industries Research Asso- ciation. The exhibits included, air-conditioning plant, humidi- flers, temperature-control appar- atus, temperature and humidity. indicators and recorders, air heaters and filters, air driers, and other apparatus of this charac- ter-Engineering.

NATIVE GOODS EXHIBITION

Kalteng, May 28. The opening ceremony of the Native Goods Travelling Exhibi-. tion for the North-west organiz- ed by Shanghai merchants was formally held here yesterday at the Native Goods Emporium. General Liu Chih, Chairman of the Honan Provincial Govern- ment, officiated at the function. which was attended by over 1,- 000 representatives from civic and official organs.-Kuo Min.

At this stage is may be well to state briefly the difference in character between the alterna-

and tivë

the orthodox atom: Both are constructed from the same positively charged protons and negatively charged electrons, arranged to form a planetary system in which some of the particles form a central nucleus. round which the remainder ro- tate, in orbits. The difference Iles in the respective roles played by the protons and electrons. In the orthodox atom the orbital particles are, all electrons, while all the protons and some of the electrons are situated in the nucleus. In the alternative atom this arrangement is inverted. The nucleus.is wholly composed of electrons, while all the pro- tons and some of the electrons are found in the orbits. Just as in the Rutherford-Bohr atom, the atomic weight is solely deter- mined by the number of protons, and neutrality of the atom as aing Kiangai and Hupeh. The whole is provided for by the equal number of electrons. The nuclear charge determined by Moseley's atomic number is ar- ranged for by the electrons in the nucleus being similar in num- ber, Thus the nuclear charge in the alternative atom, it will be observed, is négative tri sign and opposite. to that of the orthodox atom, which is composed pre- dominantly of protons.

ANOTHER RAILWAY".

Nanking, May 29. The Ministry of Rallways has decided to build a railway link-

projected line will start from Shaho Station at Klukiang and traverse Sulchang. Yangsin and Fuchiso, along the Klangsi-Hu- peh border,, to connect with the Hunan-Hupeh section of the Qanton-Hankow Railway. Sur-

vey work on the route having been completed, construction is expected to commence in June. The entire line will be completed in three years.-Kuo Min.
