MUSIC, MIRTH, AND LAVISH SPECTACIE

Masterly Stage-Craft

The presentation of "George White's Scandals" proved that FOX were not merely beating the big drum, in claiming this film to be their greatest musical production.

As one would expect from such an event as a George White Alm. the main achievement is a suc- cession of beautifully staged en- sembles and in which mirth, melody, and specacle are blend-. ed by the hand of a master. No less remarkable than the ocular appeal of these sumptuously. `dressed numbers is their prodi- glity no less than ten mam- "moth acts being presented-and It is this swift and sustained se- quence of "Anely varled" enter- tainment which stamps the pic=" "ture as the box office winner it

unquestionably is. ".

Backing the sheer spectacle of it all, there is some delightful fooling by Jimmy Durante, and, brand of amiable drollery fram Ukelele Ike. to which may be added the vocal appeal of Rudy Vallee in ting and tuneful

ballad.

μ

"George.. White's Scandals" therefore appears to have every- thing calculated to satisfy the demands and the appetites of the generalty of cinema goers, and Incidentally, to inaugurate a most gratifying boom at the box office.

Miss Barrie started her career as a dancer but soon changed so the legitimate theatre and became the favourite leading lady of Austra- lia. She has appeared in such plays as "Let Us Be Gay." "Autune Crocus." "Hay Fever". While Parents Sleep" and others. "

The actress was on Toute to London to fill a theatrical engage- ment and was given a screen test by the Fox casting department in New York just before she was to board ship for England. Miss Bar- rie's work in the test which was. the first she had ever done for the screen, was so enthusiastically received by Fox studio executives in Hollywood that she was imme- diately signed to a contract. Be- fore coming to New York Miss Bar- rie visited. Hollywood but didn't venture near a studio and it was only by sheer charice that she was Induced to
