Prima Donna Wins St. George's Plate

THRILLING FINISH IN MAIN EVENT ON SATURDAY: FAVOURITES UNPLACED

Bobniak Star Starts Series Of Big Dividends

(BY

'MORNING DEW ``)-

There can be no gainsaying the fact that Saturday's racing wag the best we have had this year. The tunes were distinctly on the fast side, while there was a sufficient sprinkling of out- siders among the successful candidates to make the sport in- teresting

Mr. E. O. Butler started the ball rolling by bringing home aßobnjak Star in "the third race to pay his supporters over $70 or a win. Incidentally he upset all calculations for the “Dally Doubles," which later in the afternoon paid $463. RE

Mr. G. A. Harriman scored the most meritorious win of the afternoon when he won with Prima Donna in the principal race of the day. The finish was a particularly “exciting one. Later in the afternoon Mr. Harriman brought in, The Boders in an- other exeltingtfinish.

Mr. D. Black won the second leg of the Doables on In Good Time, while another feature of the day's racing were the fast times returned. The Australian scord for sta^ formngs was lowered by one second,

had changed, "The Bodgen, Chow Fan and Oriando disputing 'the isane. They finished in that order with six other ponles, within two lengths of the third pony.

H

ANOTHER FAST RACE Turning out in fine fettle Electric Star ridden by Mr. Butler won the fifth race over a mile from King's Bounty in the excellent time of 2.00.4. Gladiator finished third and Mayflower (second favourite) Iourth.

Gladiator led over the first three quarters of a mile, followed by King's Bounty and The Tiger. There was not much change of position as the field turned into the straight. Both Electric Star and King's Bounty passed him and Anished in that order. Gladiator was third. The rest of the fleld was well strung out. -

IN GOOD TIME

The novices event gave Black the win that he needed to take him cut of the ranks of the beginners. He rode a good race. No getting the best of the start he was con- tant to steady his mount before making a big effort and came through to win easily from Surabande. The Carp had, a bad start again. but in spite of that be managed to scramble, into third place.

and King's Justice followed

htin into the straight, but the former bad enough at the distance post and rapidly fell away. Sadko came out from the ruck in the finish- ing straight and putting in a great burst of speed came right through The field to finish within a length and half of the winner. King's Justice was the same distance be- hind Sadko. Gleneagles showed a fairly good pace at first, but had had enough after half a mile, Héttan vanished from the picture in the straight. Don was out- classed while Bag and Baggage was nothing like his old self.

This race shows conclusively that Soldier of Britain's poor showing in the Derby was, due in no smail measure to the muddy state of the course at the Annual Race

Meeting.

Elve much trouble this time.

The race was won in 1.18.3, which Is the fastest time ever returned in Hong Kong, by Australian ponies over six furlongs. The winner was running at 145 pounds, ten pounds under "weight for inches.”****

A THRILLING FINISH

The fourth race over a mille and

a quarter saw the best finish of The day when three ponies passed the post in almost a straight line. The judges awarded the race to Prima Donna by a short head with Lemberg and Soldier of Germany dead-heating for second place. Hydroplane, Soldier of China and Brilliant Star were close up at the Anish.

Soldier of Germany led, the field by three lengths, being, followed by Gak Bay, Prima Donna and Lem- berg. Brilliant Star, Hydroplane

and Soldier of China were at the rear.

BISTRE SCORES-2

As predicted, Bistre won the last race in a field which drew twenty starters." Mr. 8. Y. Laing rode this Feandidate and was among the vanguard all the way. Beta with Mr. Ip up managed to take second place, while Great Hall and what A Chance, two well tacked ones, finished together, dead-heating for third place.

At the five furlongs post, Bril- |- lant Star was last but his Jockey immediately gave him a run in the back straight and he came along Soldier of China began to lessen nicely. Meanwhile Hydroplane and the gap between them and the leaders. «At the Rock, Prima Donna was slightly in front of

BRONZE ERA FAILS, Bronze Era, who was nominated to win the first leg of the "Doubles" was left at the gate in this sprint. He received a bump from Little Vic. · Racing Heart was caught nepping and also lost many lengths at the start, day "Bobniak Star and Just That led -in that order and drew, quite a distance ahead. Just That drew slightly in front after the incline and looked like a winner when Bobniak Star came along again and led into the field Mr. Butler riding him all the way home to win by a neck from Night Star, who came along with a great

cutside and running well, and be- tween them was Lemberg. while Prima Donna was also well upon the outside of Hydroplane. "At the distance post. Mr. Proulx began to drop. the pace being too much. Brilliant Star came up, but only to drop out again.

Meanwhile Mr. Soares on the rails was being hard pressed by Lemberg, when Prima Donna join ed the issue. The mare put up a fine race to win by a short head.

HARRIMAN AGAIN

No less than ten ponies, out of a field of twenty-four, disputed the issue when a hundred yards from home in the Tai Mo Span Handi- cap for "D" Class" over six-fur- longs.
