Competitions
The position of those sports- men who are engaged in the trade has long been unsatisfactory. Clearly it was an unwarranted Interference with a man's privatų life if, because he had some con- nection with the motor industry, he could not take part in even the closed competitions of his own club.
That however is now altered, and the trader like the private owner can enter the events of his own club, and generally compete. side by side with other owners, provided the car is actually his own and registered in his name. A trader may not lend cars" to private motorists for competition purposes, but that is quite reason- able as regards club events, and altogether the position is now quite satisfactory.
Of course events approved by trade organisation as open events which can be fully supported by the trade are a different matter, but there are very few of these. The difficulty has been with club' events in which trade members, wished to compete as private in- dividuals.

A Missing Number
I wonder how many readers of these notes on Tuesday last week realised that there was a word of no small importance missing from the last sentence of a paragaph about my recent visit to the Aus- tin factory at Birmingham. The paragraph in question, was
one
in which I mentioned some of the latest extensions of plant that I had seen during my visit."
It so happened that I did not read through this contribution in print on the day it appeared. but at a function the next day a friend drew me aside and whis- pered, "What's this latest mystery at the Austin works?" He pro- duced a cutting of the paragraph, and this is what I rend. !
and a new battery of something like electrical engine-test beds.”
As indicated above, a missing word Was the cause of the. "mystery." That word was "fifty." My guide at the factory could not tell me exactly how many new. electrical engine-test beds were.: being installed in the space pre- pared for them, "but said there would be "something like flity."
There is certainly nothing my- terious about these engine-test.. beds; they are a feature of many modern factories. But they are rather intrigulag" nevertheless An engine is bolted down to a cast-iron bed and coupled to an electric "dynamotor. Current is then switched on to the latter so that it may serve first as a motor, to rotate the engine at a prede- termined speed and, give it an initial run-in
A yellow light shows on an in- trument panel ́it engine stinness is normal; a red light indicates excessive stiffness, and need for examination to And the cause; a green light comes on when the stiffness has passed off enough for the engine to be run safely under its own power,
Agreement in respect of "her ex- ports, does not accord any pre ferential treatment to the manu- factures of Lancashire, which are being steadily ousted in the market by Importations from Japan.
Towards the close of the year an arrangement was concluded bet ween India and Japan with a view to securing a fair share of the Indian market to British imports and at the same time enabling the Indian mille, which were on the verge of bankruptcy, to work at remunerative, values. Whilst it seems that India will benefit by The Agreement, it is not yet clear that any great advantage will accrue to Lancashire. Since this Agreement was concluded there have been negotiations" for 14 agreement between representatives of the industry in this country and Japan. These negotiations have unhappily broken down. Whether agreement may or may not result, it is more imperative, than ever for Lancashire to concentrate upon a reorganisation of the industry.
The general economic condition of Irak shows a noticeable impro- vement during 1933. It is a matter of no little concern that the United. Kingdom and India are losing much ground, in their business with Trak The United States of America since the depreciation of the dollar has been making more headway and Japan has been seriously displacing Manchester cotton goods and artificial' silk. manufactures from this country,
The report and accounts were unanimously adopted,
among
motorists. His question is as follows:-"Does a piston stop at each end of its stroke while the crankshaft is revolving?"
Apparently an argument has arisen as to how one part can possibly stop moving while it is firmly coupled to another that does not cease to move, The question
that rather implies there has been some confusion of thought, or, rather, failure to distinguish between stopping" and "remaining stationary.”
-A' piston uriddubtedly stops each end of its stroke; it must do so in order that its direction of motion may be reversed.. But theoretically it does not re- main stationary.
In practice, however, it stops and remains stationary, though how long it is without movement depends upon a number of vari-' able factors, such as the crank- shaft speed, length of crank throw, length of connecting rod, thickness of the oll films in the gudgeon pin arid big-end bear- ings, and the viscosity of the 'oll, the latter in turn depending upon the characteristics of the ófi in conjunction with its temperaturę, while the thickness of the o films depends upon the bearing
The latter brings the electrical machine into use as a dynamo: various power and consumption tests ensue, until a predetermined standard is reached and maln- ・・・ clearances....t tained. The current generated" during these engine-power tests supplements the electric power supply of the factory.
New Motoring Conundrum
A correspondent who is inti- mately connected with the motor Industry, I may say propounds one of those conundrums relating to the operation of cars and their components that not Infrequent- ty give rise to lengthy arguments
Among the other conundrums to which I have referred are those relating to the motion and speed of any given point on a tyre relative to the road, the un- equal length of the "half" strokes of a piston variations in fuel consumption at high and low speeds, and, hoary with age as a point of discussion, among novi- ces in particular, the direction In which a car tends to overturn when a corner is negotiated too fast.
