"ROMAN SCANDALS" Special Supplement

"Roman Scandals" Is Fourth Big Musical Extravaganza of Eddie Cantor's.

SHOWING TO-DAY AT THE QUEEN'S

AND ALHAMBRA THEATRES

Cantor Cavorts Amid The Grandeur That Was Rome

Ancient Rome in all is galety, colour and glory is the setting for "Roman Scandals." Eddie Cantor's fourth annual screen musical comedy for Samuel Coldwyn. which begins at the Queen's and Alhambra Theatres -to-day.

Ruth Etting, Glória Stuart and David Manners, Cavort with Eddie in his newest plcture. successor to last year's "The Kid from Spain."

The pageantry and the specta- cle of that distant day, with its marching leglons in burnished armour, the arenas and the bloody games, the beautiful slave girls in chains and the Emperor's gorgeous favourites in garlands of flowers, the glitter and pomp of a stately court

thundering and steeds tearing their charlots " through clouds of dust-all helped. to give Goldwyn a generous op- portunity for another of the la- vish productions that he makes of the annual Cantor carnivals of fun and splendour."

This is only a setting, however, for the simple and human little comedy that George S. Kaufman and Robert Sherwood have writ- ten for the pop-eyed comedian, in which the austere grace of classic antiquity is contrasted with the Latin warmth of colour, that dis- tinguished "The Kid from Spain."

Before Eddie gets to the charlot chase that winds up the hilarious yarn he meets other equally fan- tastic adventures. Disguised in blacklace, he steals into the Im- perial Beauty Court, where: he watches the dazzling beauties glo- rified for the Emperor's pleasure.

In the great Slave Market scene he is placed on the auctier block,. while Ruth Etting, sings her haunting lament "No More Love," the dancing girls. in their giltter-

ing skirts of silver mesh dance a wild bacchanal and the senators contemplate the charms of yellow- " haired captives from far-off Bri- tain, arrayed on a living treeze and

or sale to the highest bidder.

The gold and scarlet robes of state are worn by Edward Arnhold as the wicked Emperor Valerius d by statuesque, Verce Teasdale

he Empress Agrippa. Gloria Stuart and David Man- ners are concerned in the ronance that is guided along its rocky path by Eddie, and Ruth Etting bas the role of Olga. the discarded Mistress of the Emperor.

William Anthony McGuire ad- pted the story: Busby Berkeley staged the dances: Warren and "Dubin wrote the songs.

Frank Tuttle directed this Unit- ed Artists release.

"Top That Beams Comedian When Six Year Old Janet Springs A Nifty

Eddie Cantor is a good audience, especially as a family man.

امیر

When his little daughter Janet, aged 6, tells him that her nurse is going to a special heaven in which there are no flowers because she has hay fever, Eddie is convulsed.

Or when one of the Cantor cronies, sitting around the, family board, boasts of the constant use he makes of flying as a means of transportation, she llits her girlish voice to say, "Quick, close the win- dow or he'll By right out of here." Eddle proudly beams and asks you “Nów top that, can you?”

And you can't.

The Cantor daughters, 'Marjorie aged 18, Natalle, 17, Edna' 15, Marilyn, 13 and Janet, 6, love pic- tures. Ploted by Mama Ida, they hurry through their evening meal to get to' one of the neighbourhood playhouses in which previews are ..held. Papa Eddie then takes. `B back seat to Clark Gable or Leslie Howard or Gary Cooper. Воте- times he's out of running entirely. When Eddie finished Roman Scandals," his fourth annual screen musical comedy for Samuel Gold- wyn, showing at the Queen's and Alhambra Theatres, the Cantor family seat was officially moved from Hollywood to New York, Ruth Etting, Gloria Stuart and a whole flock of this year's erop of Gold- wyn girls, Eddie's companion in the picture, came to the station to see the Cantor brood off to New York. Eddie stayed on for apother two weeks for the preview at “Ro- man Scandals," and then followed. Early in the spring, Eddie will return to California to make an- other picture, for which the story la being written by Arthur Sheek. man and Nat Perrin. When that picture is completed Eddie plans to take his family abroad for his first visit in nine years, and to be in England for the London premiere of "Roman Scindais," a United Artists release.
