"HER SWEET- HEART"

Two Great Starş Together

"Her. Sweetheart" (Christopher Bean), based on the play "The one of Late Christopher Bean,' New York's outstanding dramatic hits, opens to-day at the Queen's) Theatre bringing together Marie Dressler and Lionel Barrymore in their first appearance as co-stars.

The new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer --offering is based on Sidney Ho-

.ward's celebrated drama, of a wo- man who shows a man the road back to honour. It was adapted from the French of Rene Fauchols and was first produced by Gilber Miller at the Henry Miller Theatre in New York with Pauline Lord as the star.

Miss Dressler, fresh from tri- uraphs in Tugboat Annie and "Dinner at Eight," and Barry more, famous "Rasputin "and re- cently seen in. "The stranger's Return, head a distinguished cast which includes Helen Mack, Reulan Böndi, Russell Hardle, Jean Her- sholt, HB: Warner, Helen Shipman, George. Coulouris and Ellen Lowe Miss Bond and Coulouris were members of the original stage

cast:

The uniting of Miss Dressler and Barrymore recalls that they to- gether won the awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Miss Dressler for her work, in "Min and Bill" and Bar- rymore for his brillant portrayal in "A Free Boul." Their new co- starring picture was filmed under the direction of Sam Wood pro- duced the successful "Hold Your Man,"

The story of Her Sweetheart" (Christopher Bean) deals with the doctor and family of a country their servant, Abby. They learn that the paintings of an obscure artist whom the doctor once be friended are now worth a fortune. Those they had have disappeared with the exception of one, a port Talt owned by the servant. The kindly doctor under the lash at greed becomes a scheming fraud until the dramatic denouement in which he returns to his better 'na-, ture under the influence of the kindly Abby

Problem In Baby Elephants

Getting a bably elephant for a motion picture is not as easy as it may sound: Clyde E. ElHott, director of "Devil Tiger"" Fox Film's saga of Asia's jungles, wanted a baby pachyderm for his picture and sent out a call,

The natives of Mayala heeded and began an intensive search. The hunt continued for a month

without results, Elliott was "be- coming impatient. His company was being held up by the sequen- ces that included the baby ele- phant

Hope of getting one was finally abandoned, and Elliott asked Joames Spearing, author of the story, to rewrite some of he scenes. The company then went into the depths of the Jungle, with all thoughts of he baby elephant put away. The sequence to be photo-

graphed was the capture of a maneating tiger, which was to be lured inside a net operated by a bamboo, spring.

-Fresh meat, was laid in the. center of the net and the camera men and director concealed them-

selves behind a blind, A tiger had been reported in the neighbour- hood, For hours the company waited while beaters tightened a circle of a mile, concentrating toward the spot. The sun mer- cllessly beat down. When strange sounds were heard the cameras began to grind, only to stop on the discovery that it was a lesser beast stalking through the tall grass, not a' tiger.'

HOW VIOLET LORAINE CAME TO BE ENGAGED FORBRITANNIA”

The story of how Violet Loraine came to be engaged to play the role of Mrs. Bolton ("Britannia”) in the Gaumont British picture ""Britannia" of Billingsgate an- other British picture expected shortly shows that her here engagement was just a matter of happy chance,

The Director of the Gaumont- British studios happened to wit- ness an impromtu performance Green of Violet Lorames at a Room Club dinner. So impres sed was he with her show that he tried to sign her up straight away but Miss Loraine hesitated for some days, on the grounds that she was too nervous. Only after a lot of persuasion did she consent to sign. The screening of Britannia of Billingsgate proves her. to be as brilliant on the films as on the stage, a fact that is suficient commentary on the wisdom of the directors choice.

#The Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Company has been shopping for störles recently; and came home with Rudyard Kipling's Kim" and Captains Courageous' es well as Dashell Hammett's The Thin Man," which somebody has said is the finest mystery story ever written: Which is a pretty big order.
