Research

To critics who wonder why. private research laboratories were necessary when an association laboratory existed, Sir Hugo Hirst made an Interesting answerin the replying to the toast of "British Electrical and 'Allied In- dustries Research Association" at the annual luncheon of that body, held at the Savoy Hotel on Friday. February 9. He had found, he said, that In spite of modern works and machinery and skilled, engineers, and designers, there was something lacking when it was a question ot Investigating the cause of failures. The empirical information available to deal. with these conditions gave scant satisfaction and to get at the truth of things research was also found necessary. He had that though 50 years ago England was leading industrially, the in-. fluence of protection and the fact that they were able to start where we left off had meant increasing successful competition from foreigners and had led to our gradually becoming "behinders." In fact, when war broke "out, as

BRIDGE OVER CHIEN

TANG RIVER Hangchow, March 22.-Indica- ting the importance attached to iron the construction of the bridge across the Chien-tang River here, the Cheklang Provin- cial Government, on the recom- mendation of Mr. Tseng Yang-tu, Provincial Commissioner of Re- construction, has decided to organise a Special Engineering Committee of 26 to take charge of the project.

LOCOMOTIVE AXI LUBRICATION

The lubrication of locomotive axleboxes is an important detail of locomotive upkeep, as any neg- lect inevitably leads to heated Journals and possibly to a "fal- lure" that is, a fallure of the engine concerned to continue its booked working, an occurrence re- fecting somewhat seriously upon the locomotive running depart- ment: The earliest method of applying lubrication in the form of oll was by casual pouring down- a hole provided in the crown of the axlebox. As engiries in those days made short runs with fre- quent stops, casual feeding stiffic ed, and there was no need to bro- ther about any form of automatic or continuous supply.

It is little surprising that no great advance on this original method has yet been made be- yond that of employing trimmings and a reservoir às intermediaries to ensure a more continuous sup- ply. These trimmings are pre pared from ordinary worsted of good quality, which is loosely wo- ven about a doubled and twisted copper-wire centre to fit in the mouth of the oll-pipe, the ends or "talis" of the worsted-being allowed to trail in the oil reser-

of the Kiangsu Provincial Gov-voir, with the result that the ol

ernment, and Chon slang-hsien, Mayor of Hangchow, have been invited to serve as members of the Committee-Kuo Min. : -".

The ability to withdraw the trimming and to pour excess oll directly down the oil-pipe while the engine is in-motion in the case of an axlebox running badly and so possibly to restore it to normal is a valuable feature of the second system; as the oil- boxes are always m acdessible positions they can always be re- Alled while the engine is in mo- tion. The two disadvantages of trimmings are that they are apt to get foul in time and so, to choke the oil-supply and also that as long as they are in position and there is oll in the box feeding will occur, a wasteful process in the case of engines at rest for any considerable period of time. The first disadvantage can be avoided by frequent cleaning and occa- slonal renewal and the second by withdrawing the trimmings from the oll-pipes and replacing them after and before running respec- tively.
