BY ACCIDENT
Series Of Many Uses
A mere accident of chance has once more given science s, new Idea. This time it is a series of copper alloys which Dr. H. W. Brownsdon, research manager of IC.I. Metals Ltd, and his staff hit upon in the laboratory "when working on something different.
entirely
copper.
"Kurial." Suggesting nickel, and aluminium, is the name given to the new series of The range covers copper, alloys. brass, nickel, silver, and bronze.
GREAT ADVANTAGE
וי
Dr. Brownsdon explained... to a representative of The Daily Tele- graph" that one great advantage' of the new alloys was that they could be cold worked and 113- chined when the metals were soft; the hardening process, which was a simple matter of heating, being donc subsequently.
Uses for the 'hew alloys, ‹ Dr. Brownson foresces, will be found in a great number of directions. Having high resistance to corro- sion by salt water, they would be sultable for ships' propellers, and for marine Attings generally.
To the homely safety-pin more spring would be imparted. Gear wheels would be cut more easily
and then hardened. Cases for watches would be stronger. Spring's would be more rellable and lasting. Tea and coffee pots would be fashioned when the metal is soft and then hardened so that they would not dent.
The new metals, which appear Indistinguishable from ordinary copper, brass, and nickel, will be exhibited at the British Indus-
tries Fair.
