They appear to have. been "owned" in this Colony, but there was no Ma Chow Wong to back them, to terrify or buy of the witnesses, and to make all those little arrangements which caused of yore piracy to be so safe and lucrative, provided it was conducted through the proper channels.

Eighty-nine of the grasshopper's captives were brought up for trial at the Criminal Sessions now sib- ung. On the first case twenty four of the rascals were charged with piracy and murder. The identity failed as to two of them who were discharged-the "rest were found guilty. The chief (a most desparate` ruffian) was sen- tenced to penal servitude for life- another villain was sentenced to twenty years the remainder for fifteen years. ***

The second charge was for piracy against twelve, one of, whom be- longed to the last batch. They were al found guilty and were sentenced to ten years penal ser- vitude.

The Chinese authorities have, we hear, demanded the remain- ing fity-four having charges of murder against them. They will of course be given up and decapt tated immediately.
