ANXIOUS WEEK
By: "The Scout
Shipping circles had some anxious moments during the week owing to several factors. The fog was responsible for the delay of the round-the-world liner Lurline, while farther afield, in Swatow, anxiety was felt for the safety of the Hydrangea when she was over- due by many hours on a voyage from Hong Kong. At the begin- ning of the week, tog was respon- sible for the s.s: Svale, running aground near Foochów.. That, however, is not a complete list of untoward activities in local ship- ping. for it must be conceded that the fire on the U.S.S. Fulton, which occurred on Thursday night while, patrolling Bias Bay: was one of the biggest catastrophes we have had near Hong Kong for some time. Then there was the piracy of the s.s. Norviken and by a coin- cidence, a case which occupied the attention of the Chle! Justice during the week was also concern- ed with local shipping..

SOVIET PLANE IN

Russia Wishes Return of Pilots and Machine
Harbin, Mar. 16.
OC-
The report that a Soviet bomber nisde a forced landing on Man- chukuo territory"north of Vladivos- tock on March 11, was confrmed when M. Slavutsky called on Colonel Komatsubara, head of the Japanese Military Mission, - and" expressed thanks to Japanese soldiers for recovering both cupants unhurt from roving bandits. He suggested as relations between the three nations were friendly
and the pilots
their machine be returned to Russia.
Col. Komatsubara replied if the violation of Manchukuo's sovereign rights proved accidental this may- be arranged although the matter Is complicated because the tres- passer was a military aeroplane.
velopment is the question of the price that Government is charging for water.. There seems to be considerable wastage going on in some quarters and landlords who are being made to pay for tenants carelessness, or want of thought, appear determined to put a stop to the system whereby they are penalised. The step suggested is well known to all, but while the landlords have indicated a passible line of action should the Govern- inent refuse to meet them in some way, the tenant can do nothing except wait to see where he will stand when it is all over. Pracover its territory--Reuter. tically the whole Colony is now "metered" and the problem this time interests the whole popula-
tion.
MODERNISING KOWLOON
Meanwhile, Manchukuo has handed M. Slavutsky $ strong protest against the bomber flying

THE ORACLE-BONES
The reference, by Dr. Tsu to the anding of oracle bones and other remnants of the Shang Dynasty (1,500 B.C.) iri Hunan province was perhaps the most interesting part of his address. The Academy of Science and Art China, under the guidance of Dr. Li Chi, is bringing to light this treasure trove for archaeologists and it is cercain that their discoveries will throw much new light on the customs and manners of the people who lived in this part of the world more than 3,000 years ago. The central part of China, which is to- day more or less desert land, was then marshy, sub-tropical land, where deers, wolves, elephants and even tigers were to be found. All these facts were recorded in the bones recently discovered and it is the hope of all interested in the early, history of China, that the work now being undertaken by Dr.
