STOCKINGS

Stockings appear to have been man's problem long before they became the bane of women's life. The story goes that the first pair of silk stockings were made in Spam for a young grandee, who, was so delighted with them that he felt they were too good for him to wear. So be decided to pre- sent them to the Queen. As he could not approach Her Majesty himself he entrusted the precious stockings to her minister, who was overcome with embarrass- ment and horror. He kept the stockings for a day or two, then returned them to the young grandee, telling him to remember that the Queen of Spain had no !cgs,"
