who was executor to John Wesley. They consisted of small pocket er- ercise books, in which Wesley made entries in form shorthand con- cerning his daily journeyings and. other matters, and they covered considerable period including
器
his visit to Georgia in 1735. For time after Wesley's death. the shorthand could not be deciphered, but the late Rev. Nehemiah Cur- nock, a (Wesleyan) Methodist min-; ister, who was for many years editor of the Methodist Recorder. studled the manuscripts with great care and discovered a key by which to interpret the writing.
He could not obtain possession of the diaries to copy them, so he went to Gatton Park and spent many months there photographing the pages. In all he took over 3,- 000 photographs. Mr. Curnock subsequently edited the diaries for publication.
Some time ago it was proposed that in view of the great value of the diaries they should be plac- ed in the British Museum, but it was ascertained that a condition of the trust under which they were acquired by the Colman family was that they should be kept in safe custody by that family.
There are also some of the orl- ginal diaries at the Methodist Pub- Hishing House in London, and the 3.000 odd photographic plates used; by Mr. Curnock are in the same building. Yesterday, these were re- moved to the strong room, on the premises for greater safety.
