CAR TRANSMISSIONS
EXPLAINED
Pre-Selective Or Self- Changing Gearbox
to
large
Fitted nowadays
of motor number and variety vehicles-cars, 'buses, coaches. tractors railcars and even motor cycles the Wilson pre-selective or self-changing gearbox embodies an old principle in a new form
It is an epicyclic or planetary transmission, resembling in prin- ciple the two-speed gear of the superseded Model T. Ford and the three-speed transmission of the long range Lanchester models that, extended from the early days of motoring until, two or three years ago. the Wilson gearbox was adopted for this make in conjunc- tlon with the Daimler fuld fly- wheel
Where the Wilson transmission differs fundamentally from these early epicyclic gears is in the pro- vision for bringing the various ratios. or. "speeds." into operation. Each and every one can be pre- selected, both from neutral and while another is in use, though no gear-change occurs until a pedal -the
gear-changing pedal-is depressed and released. If the pre-selected gear is not required after all the pre-selector lever (a finger control located under or over the steering wheel as a rule)
Its can be replaced, in original position, or moved to any other in readiness for changing. later into a higher or a lower gear than the one actually in use.
How the Gears Operate
Top gear is a direct drive as usual, implying that one of the gears." is used, the drive being соnе clutch conveyed to a small and thence straight through the gearbox to the propeller shaft. Each of the other speeds, inclu ding reverse, is gained by means of its own series of gear-wheels, which are always in mesh.
One of these gear-wheels in, each series a known as the annulus, or ring gear: it consists of a steel ring with a smooth exterior, but with internally projecting teeth. These teeth encircle and engage with those of three uniformly spaced gear pinions, which in turn encircle and engage with a central pinion. The three are known as the planet gaars (hence the term "planetary.") and the central one as the sun gear.
To bring any indirect speed into üse," a brake band is made to grip and hold stationary the annulus of the required speed. Changing gear is effected by releasing the brake around the annulus of the gear la use and then applying the brake of the gear that is required. When top gear is needed to follow the use of an indirect "gear the brake of the latter is released and the cone clutch allowed to engage,
What Takes Place
How Long To Go?
TIME ELEMENT IN AUTOMATIC SIGNALS.
Most motorists are grateful for the advent of the traffic signal light, but are also inclined to think that the system is open to further improvement. Unless the signal lamps have been in unin- terrupted view for a considerable distance it is impossible to tell on close approach, whether green or red has just begun or is about to expire. This factor of uncertain- ty is at times awkward, and, also, it leads to the impetuous sort, of driver taking chances. in a re- cent issue a note was published about a new tramic signal which was resigned to.give a clear indi- cation of the time lapse between the charges. Now another device' has made its appearance, and is a promising character. It is call- ed the Phillips road traffic signal light, and is arranged so that the face of each light shows three vertical columns with an hori- zontal column across the top. Reading from left to right in the diagrams beneath the sketch, green has just started. Then after the first small interval the foot of the centre column colours up; an- other interval, and a fresh sec- tion of the centre column is col- oured The observer sees at a glance how much time remains at any instant. On the last beat but one the horizontal colunm turnis orange, and after the last beat the left side and top change to red. Red is tinied in the same way. This description, of course, is merely ari indication of the principle, of which several varia- tions are possible,
w
The device is controlled by a series of chromium-plated shut-" ters which act also as reflectors, and the shutters are operated by a. camshaft actuated by a soler old in line with a spring-controlled air or oil cylinder. The solenoids are in circuit with the main sign- al lamps, so that when the main signal comes on the shutters open instantaneously and close in ae- quence, being timed by the lead valves of the air or oil cylinders. The inventor is Mr. A. E Phillips, 333A, Bearwood Road, Birming- ham.

clutch pedal can be used as a -pedal for starting the car in 'a low gear or for stopping; it must. In fact, be so used unless a fluid fly, wheel is an accompaniment, or unless a separate clutch (auto- matic or otherwise) is fitted, as in two cars having this transmission.
