THREE MEN LIFT 2,600

TONS

For the Arst time, the 2,500 tons centre span of the new tower bridge being constructed over the River Tees at Newport, Middles-" brough, has been set in motion. When fully raised up the towers on either side the span reached a height of 120ft, above water le- vel. The 88. Robrix had the dis- tinction of being the first ship to pass beneath the new structure," Three methods of lifting the span were brought into operation for the test, and all worked sat- isfactorily. First, the electrical machinery brought it to stop at various heights: nert, a motor engine for use in reserve achieved working by hand-power on ordin the same effect; finally three men ary hand-pulleys achieved the now well balanced is the centre- same result-thus demonstrating section.

The bridge will come into action on February 28th, furnishing a new, road-link between the count- 'les of the North Riding of York
