I thought it was too hot to be funny," at Fanling on Sunday. Evidently so did a number of the horses, for the fields for all the races except the "Country" were the smallest on record. Whether this was due to the hard ground. or the wave of hypothetical "bighead" I do not know, but at all events many of the pontes entered stayed in their boxes with a wie kind smile on their faces;

The races produced no sensa- tions. In the first. Bill "Stanton carried all before him; Kenneth . Kemble rode White Heather well into second place, while the Gost, --the only other starter-gave David Yates a nasty and extra- ordinary fall. In the second rack the "Mayor of Talpo's" Burgo-

Then the fun started. I really think that half the crowd came to Fanling to see the start of the Ladies race. This one surpassed all former efforts: "I want "you to walk up" said the starter, rals- ing his flag. Upon which, three ladies disappeared rapidly in the direction of Canton, one of the older horses fainted, and the cow jumped over the moon. When they had gathered up the "frag- ments, they managed to get off

The Country race had so many starters that it was divided into two sections. Even so, it resem- bled a cavalry charge. Ferguson Christmas Belle" took the honours in the first section, while, after many vicissitudes Bill Stan- ton's Skewbald Grin won the second.. I was sorry to hear that Jenkins' pony fell with him: the pony had to be shot, and. Jenks hurt his arm badly. I hope he will soon recover.

Those who are interested, in watching races will do well to remember that there is an Army point-to-point near Potta bunga- low on Sunday. The course is being flagged with only 3" flags, and I think the results of the races will come as a surprise to a lot of people
