CHINESE FISH-BOWL FOR MUSEUM

Albert Institution
The Victoria and Albert Museum has acquired & very.. large Chinese fish-bowl of porcelain, painted in underglaze blue and enamel green, red, and yellow; it bears the mark and dates from the reign of Wan 14 (1573-1819). These great garden bowls, made to hold ornamental fish and water-lilies, artistically techinically and

among the greatest achievements "of the Chinese potters. Their fir- ing presented great dimculties, and there is a legend, recorded by a- later director of the Imperial' Porcelain Factory, that one of the potters of the Wan Li period (in which this firing of some Imperial fish-bowls, bowl. was made). charged with the firing of some Imperial fish-bowls in despair of a 'successful result cast himself into the kiln, with the consequence that the bowls came out perfect, French Bedstead.
Early specimens are rarely seen, in Europe, possibly on account of their great size and weight, which make transport a difficult, matter. The design of ducks in pairs, in- cluding mandarin ducks (emblems of conjugal felicity), lotuses, and water weeds on this specimen is remarkably rhythmical and lively.
Mack. Accused said he later asked the sixth accused to do the work. Questioned by the Judge, the sixth prisoner said he was the owner of the Lien Vi printing shop. When the first prisoner placed an order with his shop for the print-
