When is ghee not ghee? Standing alone, that question might convey nothing to the average man, but the same ques- on is the subject of an unusually interesting case which opened before Mr. E W. Hamilton at Central Magistracy yes- terday when a Chinese storekeeper, Leung Loy Han, of the Yee Sang Loong provision store was charged with selling to Sanitary Officer W. C. R. Lampril on January 4. last an article of food not of the nature, substance or quality demanded...the quality demanded being ghee.

"Mr. W. R. Cole of Messrs, Geo. K. Hall Bruston & Co., gulity appeared for, the defence and returned a "plea of not while the Assistant Crown Solicitor." Mr. T. S. Whyte Smith.. prosecuted.

A similar charge was preferred against B. Ditta of 68. Hen- nessy Road but the Magistrate deelded to take the cases separately.

One of the witnesses called yes- terday, Banta Singh, acting Ber- geant Major in the Police Force, made the astounding statement that the ghee that is being sup- piled to the Indian Police was not pure ghee but that it was a mix- ture of the pure article and what is known as vegetable ghee.

Mr. Whyte-Smith: With regard to your own supply of ghee, how do you satisfy yourself that it is the genuine article?-With each shipment from Calcutta. I get an analyst's certificate and all my ghee is from Calcutta:
