Fast Work by Derby Griffins: Hem Stable Making A Claim (BY: MORNING DEW")

Fast work by Derby griffins characterised the gallops on Saturday morning. "Prima Donna covered the fall Derby, distance in 3:21.4, King's Warden in 3.22,

Spinaway in 3.24.2.

The appearance of New Star's name among those who finished well will begin to cause racing fans to inquire whether the Kong Bros' stable may not have a chance for the Derby. The gallops during the current week will probably supply an

answer.

The candidates from the Hem stable were galloped at twelve noon, and there, was quite a number of “fans to watch their performances. Gladiator and Macaroni went out over a mile and a quarter and their times were as follows:36.3, 1.11.3, 1.44.4, 2.16, 2.46.4. Lemberg also went out over a mile and a quarter, their times being 35.1. 1.09.1, 1.42.1, 2.13.2, 2.46.3.

Bayardo and Herod went over a mile, but their work was on the slow side the times being 40, 1.12.2, 1.43.4, 2.16.2.

Another fine piece of work was by Electric Star, who went over three quar tera of a mile in 1.36, finishing hard held in 31:2.

Some fast work was seen in the subs class where The Carp took 2.15.2 for

a mile and City View, 2.15.4. Both however, finished unimpressively. The Rodega, Kitsap and Classic Hall were others which galloped well.

Flammery covered a good mile in the Australian C 195, taking 2 minutes over the journey. The last half mile took only 56.3 seconds.

Probables Beaten But Combine Well

The Probable Interport Rugby fifteen were defeated on Saturday by the Rest at Happy Valley by a penalty goal and a dropped goal (7 points) to two tries (6 points), in a game full of good handling and determined tackling.

As a result of Rigg being inds- posed and leaving the held at half- time, Grimths WEL transferred from the Real'a three-quarter line to the Probable Bfteen to all in the gap caused by Rigg's depar- ture, while Buckley was moved up from '. full-back tó centre three quarter in place of Griffiths, Selby deputised at full back for the Rest in place of" Buckley.

Burch opened the scoring for the Probables from a ne-out a yard from the Rest line. Robertson falled to majorise, the effort with "a good effort.

The Rest attacked strongly from the kick-off, but determined tackl Lig by the Probable backs prevent- ed any score. The Rest eventually equalised through a penalty goal, Burch being pulled up for an early tackle, Lloyd having no dia- culty in landing a goal from the mark.

In the second half the Rest backs showed fine understanding. but the Probables went further ahead when Meeke cleverly came round the "blind side" to score a brillant try from the half-ways mark. Robertson again falled with the kick, though his effort which was very high, was a close one.

The Rest three's were now in the picture with some splendid move ments, and it was not long before Branch cut in. from the wing to land a magnificent dropped goal to give the Rest a point lead which they maintained until the end.
