Exactly how much does the stop watch tell your as to a pony's capabilities? Some would have us believe that the training gallope, if regularly timed would tell us everything there is to know about a horse, while others shake their heads and say that the stop watch tells you nothing.

It is obvious to anyone, however remotely he may be connected with local racing, that when two ponies re gister the same training times, the only way to tell which is the better pony is to watch the finish and see which one comes home tired and which fresh. is nothing short of ridiculous, also, to say that because two ponies have done a mile in say 2.10, that they are about the same, even if one did a fast three quarters of mile and dragged its way home in the last quarter, while the second did a fast gallop up the home straight..

The last quarter, therefor, is an interesting part of the gallop. Below, readers will find some notes or the best performances of this season, according to the stop watch. It remains to be seen whether the best training times will bring the best results at the annual meeting.

Dunbar's Best

According to the stop watch, Chief Seattle is the best griffin in- the Dunbar stable. He has regis- tered the fastest last quarter to, date, taking 28.4 seconds on Janu- ary 13-On that occasion he was sent over a mile and a half, which he covered in 3.41.3.

Chief Seattle has always been consistent in his strong finishes, and an examination of the train- ing times will show that as far back as January 3rd; he has been winding up his long gallops with fast finishes, the last quarter, on that occasion being 29.3 seconds. Another nice gallop was put in on January 17 when a mile and a half was concluded with a sprint of.29.2 A week later Chief Seat- ile covered a mile in 2.09.3, but Was faster mile the first half than the concluding balf!
