. Whether influenced by the re- cent declaration of dividends by some of the local companies, or whether the present level of prices is proving attractive, the fact re- mains that the market in the past week assumed a decidedly healthier tone, and a fair volume of business has been put through.:

Advances are to be noted in a number of issues, principally in Hong Kong Trams, China Lights, Hotels, Humphreys, Dairy Farms and Douglases. At the moment of closing, a number of unniled orders are in evidence for Lights, Trams, Botels and Telephones

Asia" Landa, Imited bas received the following report from their New York correspondente. E A. Pierce & Co. When the general advances tend- ed to flatten, there was no sign of active selling pressure. The market: continues to act as though the controlling forces are content to allow natural constructive developments to exercise their influence. The favour-- ite groups at present are motor and steel shares, with an increasing inter- est in retail merchandising issues.

Wheat: Tired holders are liquidating. We need more buying power to maintain any advance.. The predicted moisture in the South-West has disappeared.

Cotton: The market was easier on early foreign selling and local liquidation, but later buying broadened, especially on the Washington cotton gin control news. The undertone is good.

17.

Silver: The market opened decidedly easier on further liquidation by tired longs, tower foreign markets aud on news being disappointing concerning remonetisation.....
