The West is closing the year with brighter outlook than at one time seemed likely. Since the sum- mer months there has been an im- provement in business conditions and a more confident attitude on the part of traders, resulting, in some cases, in a convervative ex- pansion of lines that appealed to buyers throughout the country. It has not been a favourable year for industrial expansion in the way of new factories, but there has been some buliding up of existing plants and the manufacture of new lines of merchandise, While construc- tion shows some improvement to- wards the end of the year, it bas not agured largely in the return to better conditions, Mining of all kinds has been one of the most no- ticeable improvements, together with

20 Utilities 40 Bonds Commodity Index'. Asia Landa, Limited, has received the following report form their New York correspondents, E. A. Pierce & Co. There was evidently quite a little profit-taking, but we do not expect a serious reaction yet. As a matter of gossip, bullish talk has been brard of oils and coppera. We would rather follow the first group than the second.

Wheat: Local liquidation and lack of sapport were depressing infa- edce the continued dry weather making a foundation for a better market later.

Cotton: Lack of definite development in the ginning control measure appeared temporarily to discourage additional speculative buying. How ever the domestic trade bought liberally on set-backs. Foreign buying" appears to be lagging.

Silver: Scattered support was encouraged by Washington reports. that the Silver Bloc will offer an amendment to the Gold Bill providing for the purchase of silver.
