Bir William Clarkson, who born in 1859, was 'articled to the well-known engineering firm of R. and W. Hawthorn, of Newcastle- on-Tynę. He entered the Austra- lian Enval service in 1884 and was employed from 1808 to 1911 In Great Britain in connection with the building of the first ship of the Australian navy and the equip- ment of a Small Arms Factory, He was successively Third Naval Member, Commonwealth Naval Board (Australia) 1911-1922: Director of Transports and Con- troller of Shipping 1914-1920: and Director of the Australian Shipping Board, 1923-1927.
