Thorpe, giving evidence, said for safety against war-time air raids he secreted £7,000 in sovereigns in his house at Teddington.

When he saw Zeppelin's being built on Lake Constance in 1914 he was convinced that war com- ing. Knowing that this ountry would be bombed, he changed his cash into sovereigns. On August 4, 1914, he put 350 each in twenty tobacco, tins, glued down the lids. and put them under the dining- room floor. He thought if his house were bombed and burned the money would be safe.

He told this story to a tax in- spector, who laughed and said.
