DORMAN LONG

Many Signs Of Recovery

(Special Afr-Mail Service)

London, January 2. Messrs. Dorman Long and Com-" pany are restarting two additional blast furnaces at Redcar to enable them to meet the Increasing de- mand for pig iron.

This announcement was made at the annual meeting of share holders of the company at Middles- brough

Mr. Charles Mitchell, the chair- man, who made the announce- ment, stated that since September they had found work for 2,400 more men, and that their present pay- roll would be further increased shortly.

Their production figures showed marked improvement. In 1930 the firm's "output was 75 per cent. of the average output of the 1927-29 period. In 1931 it was 53 per cent., and in 1932 it was as low as 47 per cent.

GERMAN SHARE

MARKET

Tone Decidedly Firm

Berlin, January 20. The share market on Saturday was decidedly firm because of the conciliatory tone of the German answer to France and England on the disarmament question, as well as favourable reports about indus-

trial outlook restored confidence. For instance, there was news of increased.production of both coal and lignite, while German Steel Trust are engaging a large number of extra foundry workers.

-Commodity Index

Asia Lands, Limited, has received the following report form their New York correspondents. E. A. Pierce & Co. Evidently profit-taking appeared which was readily absorbed. We do not believe that top prices have been. reached in this movement.

Wheat: The market lacked aggressive buying. There was some selling on estimates of the World's production. The weather is still dry in the South-West,

Cotton: Selling was quite active throughout the session. Sentiment: is more mixed on the belief that part of the business improvement has been. discounted and that souce set-back is due. We doubt the likelihood of any important easing of prices from the present levels.

Silver: The market is dull, awaiting further developments in the remonetisation question. The general trend is alightly lower in sympathy with the decline in the Sterling exchange, Business Done: 1,950,000 shares.
