INDIA QUAKE CAUSES APPALLING

LOSS OF LIFE

Death-Roll Now Stands At Two Thousand

London, January 18.

Appalling loss of Hie and wide-: spread damage to property are re- ported from Bihar and Orissa and the Bengal Provinces of India us the result of the severe earth- quake shocks which occurred on Monday.

Deaths have been heaviest in Moughyr wad Mizzaffarpur, in the Ganges Valley, which, according to press reports, have been razed to the ground.

Owing to the havoc wrought by the earthquake, communications with the affected areas are com- pletely dislocated and the reports of the number killed and injured must be accepted with reserve.

It is feared, however, that nearly 2,000 casualties have occurred in Bihar and Orissa,
