Commodity Index Asia Landa, Limited, received has the following report form their New York correspondents, E. A. Pierce & Co. Washington news provided the necessary stimulne to push through resistance levels. Business news has been good since the turn of the year, but has been ignored by the market. The pace may now slow somewhat, but we think that the general trend continues upward, with greater emphasis perhaps on rails and utilities, The President's message naked affirmative legislation to empower the Government to take over the gold boldings of the Federal Reserve System, payment for this to be made in gold certificates secured at all times, dollar ho.did for dollar; by the Gold in the Treasury. The President stated that not believe it desirable that the exact value of the dollar be tixed now. He recommends, however, that Congresa fix an upper limit of permissible revaluation at sixty per cent. This would give the President authority to devalue the Dollar by proclamation to some level between fifty and sixty cents. The President suggested that out of the profits of any devaluation of the dollar there should be set up two billion dollara stabilisation fund for purchase and sales of Gold, foreign exchange and Government securities as regulation of currency; also that the Secretary of the Treasury should be empowered to deal in foreign exchanges. The President also declared that Governments ran, as well as they have in the past employ a silyer basis for currency and he looks for a greater and increased use of
silver.
Wheat: There was increased buying on the report of the gold advance tomorrow to $34.45 per ounce and on the belief that mild and controlled infistion was the President's aim. Statistics were more bullish.
Cotton: The President's monetary message was the chief bullish influence, although improvement in other markets stimulated buying. The South sold moderately.
Silver: The market was firm at the opening, advancing about sixty points, following the President's message. Prices broke seventy-eight points and then rallied thirty points on the announcement that tomorrow the gold price would be $34.45 per cupce. The with-holding of a recom- mendation by the President in connection with the monetary ass of silver for the present, promoted an active wave of liquidation Congress has voted to extend the R. F. C. for one year.
