GALLOPS
Soldier of China and Chief Seattle
Outstanding
Gallops on Saturday were of more than ordinary interest since some of the best fancied candidates gave" the fans some inkling of what they could do. Soldier of China did an outstanding gallop, covering a mile and half in 3.27.2 and finishing the last quarter in 29.3.
Chief Seattle, the best of the "Dunbar Derby string wound up a gallop of 1 miles with a last quarter of 28.4 and moved well indeed. This pony's full time, however, does not look so good as that of Soldier of China,
Sarabande continues to impress, and looks at the moment as though he is the outstanding “suh," while Classic Hall's long distance gullop revealed the pony as a strayer of some merit.
In the Australian ponies section attention should be paid to the gallop of Saucy Face, who went over, six furlongs in 1.29.3. The rest of the ponies were restrained in their work.

LESSON SERMON
FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST HONG KONG,
"Sacrament" was the subject of“ the Lesson-Sermon which was read. in all Churches of Christ, Scientist.. on Sunday, January 1eth..
The Golden Text was. "Let us keep the feast, not with old leaven.. Delther with the leaven of malice' and wickedness; but with the un- leavened bread of sincerity and truth ("1 Corinthians 5:8.)
Kaifeng, Jan, Pa This week's letter from Honan's capital can be little more than a chronicle of some of the many trials and tribulations being bourne by
Among the situations which. the provincial authoritien, writes a comprised the Lesson-Sermon was. correspondent of the north-China the following from the Bible: Daily News. Of major importance "Wherefore laying aside all malice.. is the increasingly urgent necessity and all gulle, and hypocrisies, and for some official move for the re- envies, and all evil speakings, As pair of the Lunghai Railway line, newborn babes, desire the sincere and in particular, the immediate milk of the word, that ye may grow replacement of the now rotten thereby. If so be ye have tasted sleepers along the western section of that the Lord is gracious, To whom the line between Chengchow and coming, as unto a living stone, dia- Shunchow. Pet. 2:1-6). sult of the line's giving way, was due entirely to the rottenness of the sleepers. As a result, more than Len railway workers were seriously injured and six valuable cars al- most wholly ruined. The west- bound express was also consider ably delayed which caused confu sion throughout the whole system. A high official of this line vouch safed to me that the western pection of the Lunghai line from Tungkuan on the Honan-Shensi border, to Weinen in eastern Shenai, will be completed before April this year and the section. from Weinen to Siunt, the provincial capital of Sheni, will be completed before t coming December
YELLOW. RIVER PERILS China's Sorrow is becoming more and more the special hribulation of Honan'e provincial officialdom. This it may be added, is almost in spite of the least wishes of the more easy. going among them. It is, of course, very true to say that there is an encouraging number of leaders here" who really have a patriotic interest in setting to work properly to con serve the Yellow River. The facts as they now stand are not parti- cularly cheerful.
Last year the river burst through its dykes in more than sixty differ- eat places. Only two or three of these danger points have been afted up and even then only in make shift fashion, The general course of the Yellow River in Hanan is now sweeping towards its southern dykes. The river bed at Hekang. kou (25 li north-west of Kaifongfu)" has become increasingly narrow and is now not more than 600 (Chinese) icet wide.
REFORM PROPOSAL
It is rather overwhelming to con sider the plain unvarnished state ment by Mr. Cheng Ching-yu, re constractional coramissioner of the province, which is to the effect he calculates the chances at "sinety per cent. likely that the Yellow River will this summer burst through its dykes at Kaifeng and. pass on to the sea along the Huai River's channel. Representatives dí the outlaying districts of Hunisien Changyuan and Puyang have all
The Lesson-Sermon. also includ ed the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Scien- ce and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy "Our baptism is a purification from all error. Our church is built on the divine Principle, love......Our Eucharist is spiritual communien with the one God. Our bread, ven." is Truth. According to Mr. Fu Fu-cheng, engineer of the National Economic Committee, as many na 79 branches of the river ought to be dredged in this province. Of these, nineteen aro. in the northern part of the province, six in the south and the remaining 4 in eastern Houan. The total length of these branches is estimated at more than 2,770 kilo meters and a sum of over $2,000,- 000 is required. That this plan in to be made economic from benefits to accrue is calculated in that the farming value for the area along the Hueichi River in eastern Hout is expected to be increased-by 813- 000,000 and the annual revenue of the local Government. Salt. Bureau will also be increased by 82,000,000 ne the salt lands will become arable HOil:
SALT REVENUE INCREASES The Chang River in northern Ho. nan burstile dykes on December 26 but, in official parlance, ́“no damage was done."
According or the local Government Salt Bureay, the annual salt re- venue in 1997 was $4,700,000; $5, 300,000 in 1932; and 86,008,000. Prior to 1931, the revenue of this bureau was never more than $1,000,000, The people naturally will feel, the weight of this additional burden as it is open to question whether geno ral economic improvement is in proportion to the increased revenue.
The provincial educational mine. istry was instructed to order áll government schools to forgo the fees, of students coming from the "Red Disturbed regions in southern Honan and the flood regions inf northern Honan.
On December 23 the large town of Hsuchung in Junan in "south- western Homan was captured, by bandits More than fifty houses were fired 100 captives taken "and" 200 heads of cattle driven off."?
