79-Ship Masters Write To The Editor

(November 14th, 1859) The following appeared in the correspondence columns of the pa- per of the above date:-

Whampoa, Nov. 11, 1859. Mr. Y. J. Murrow,

Editor of the "Dally Press,"

Hongkong.

Bir, We observe in your issue of the 8th instant, a long article in which it is stated that there are French vessels at Whampoa used as depots for Chinese coolles, cal- lected in the neighbourhood.

We have the honour to inform you that such an assertion is to tally unfounded. The only French merchant vessels at Whampoa at the present moment are the "Ville de Limd" and the "Galilee," which ships are under our com- mand. These never had, nor have now any coolies on board. ・

We have accordingly to request you to retract such erroneous statements in your next issue, and trust that you will not drive us to resort to measures to enforce our request, which, however repugnant to our feelings, we shall not heŝi- tate to adopt, should you decline to grant the favour We пот solicit,

B. L Blanc (Capt.

of the "Galilee") Jervols Davids' (Capt.

of the "V, de Lima")

Hongkong, Nov. 12, 1859.

Capt. B. Blanc, of the French ship "Gaillee"

Capt. Jervois Davids, of the French ship Ville de Lima,” Gentlemen,

I am in due receipt of your fa- vour of yesterday, which I shall Insert in English in the "Daily Press" of Monday.

I cannot and that the article you refer to in any way justifies the conclusion you arrive at that I had stated French ships were now lying at Whampoa as coolle depqts. I stated ships of various have been chartered for that pur- nations (French among others)

pose, and again, that the masters of such had simply to lend their ships for a fence. Clearly I re- ferred to the past, not to the pre- sent.

Li

I am happy to publish to the world, the indignation you feel at being, as you erroneously conclude, inculpated in a traffic I look upon as detestable, and in this light I shall make no comment upon the threat contained in your favour under acknowledgement. But should you honour me with any further communications, I beg that you will eschew the repitition of a course so unnecessary and dis- courteous.

I am, etc.,

CHINESE YOUTH

Mussolini Makes Speech of Welcome

The following is the message which was delivered by Signor Mussolini to the représentatives of the youth of Asia assembled In Rome last December:-

"I feel very glad indeed to wel- come the Asiatic Students who have come to Rome in the cradle of which such a vital part of the history of our civilisation found its birth and development. Though somebody once' said that 'East and West can never meet this state- ment has been disproved by the lessons of history. Of course it is ecmmon knowledge that twenty centuries ago Rome succeeded in achieving the union of West and East under her Symbal. For a long period this union influenced tion. Now if the modern world the course of European,

must again resume an universal wants to continue its course, it

character. The unity of the Me- ditteranean civilisation, which combined in itself occident and orient, fasted for many centuries.

civilisa-

in

As a consequence of the chang- ing tide of the trade and of the discovery of the gold mines the New World, however, another civilisation has been created whose original stamp Is purely material

From this moment the links be- tween West and East became of a secondary importance and have been limited to purely connections

materiai

That is why all trace of colla- boration between East and West vanished so that the opinion was entertained that Asia was an enemy to Europe.

Everybody should be interested. therefore, in any reaction against the ideas of bygone times... This reaction has found its true ex- pression in Italian. Fasciam which fights for the resurrection of faith and ideals as living of history::-In the same way that the collabora tion of Rame with the ancient times has preserved the very existence of civilisation sc does Italian Fascism look eagerly toward the East in order to lead it toward new aims."
