LAUDER
Degree Conferred by Governor at University.
SIR WILLIAM HORNELL REVIEWS THE YEAR
There was a very large attendance at the University yesterday when degrees were conferred by the Chancellor, His Excellency Sir William Peel on the successful candi. dates in the Faculties of Medicine, Engineering and Arts. The Hon. Mr. Paul Lander was conferred with the de- gree of "Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa).
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Sir William Hornell reviewed the year's work and in the course of his The speech, appealed for support in various directions. need for more room in the University Union and for more spacious playgrounds was emphasized,
PICTURESQUE PROCESSION INTO GREAT HALLTM
A procession including Members of the University's Court, Council, Senate and Star fled into the Great Hall precisely at 5 p. Among them were a number of leading citizens, who presented a picturesque aight in their robes and vari-coloured cowls.
The procession was as follows:— His Excellency The Chancellor
The Mace Bearer The Vice-Chancellor and Thei
Hon Treasurer.
The Dean, Faculty of Medicine and The Dean, Faculty of Engineering.

an armchair a book and a pipe, those who know him best realise most strongly that he took up public service reluctantly and from asbeer sense of duty.' May he be happy in his retirement; those who have worked with him in this University will not forget him.
Sir Claud Severn.
Two of our honorary doctors of law died last year. Str. Claud Severn and Dr. John Swire. Sir Glaud Severn was Colonial Secre tary of Hong Kong, from 1912 to 1926. From 1912 1021 he was University's Pro-Chancellor. - Dur ing that period and in that dupa- city he exercised on several octa- slons all the functions of Chan- cellor. Sir Claud Severn was always the University's' friend:
'Dr. John Swire was for some time head of Messrs John.. Swire and Sons and it was that fr which in May, 1909, gave. £40,000 towards the University project,
The University also lost Mr. Chau Yue Ting a member of the Court and Mr. A. C.-Frankin whờ was the Registrar from 1913-18 and who was always the University's well wisher. The Rev, C. I Blan- chett who died early last year, though never actually a member of the University, had done the Institution some service not only in connection with St. John's and St. Stephen's Halls, but also in Canton.
Only two honours came to Hong Kong in the New Year Honours
Mr. L. Oppenheim and Mr. R. & List; both these came to members of the University. This is a matter Tissington.
of gratification not of surprise. We congratulate the Hon. Dr. A. B. Wellington. C.M.G., and Mr. Tang Shiu Kin. O.BE. We have not forgotten that it was Mr. Tang | Shiu Kin who paid for the Univer- sity History which was distributed on the occasion of the University's |--- | coming-of-age.
