CANTON BACHELORS" BALL

As always, this was quite one. of the most successful parties of the year (either next or last, as you prefer!) There is usually a' long list of guests from Hong Kong, and this time was no ex- ception, though we missed several familiar faces. But I expect · they found one New Year's Eve party was all, they could stand, and had completely exhausted their energies at the Peak Club on Saturday night! Still, some people managed both, I believe. "THE DECORATIONS

Last year the Theatre suffered a bit from the prevailing depres- sion; but by now everyone is so tised to being depressed that things are beginning to go on Just as they always did, and as niuch Care (If not as much money) had been spent on the decorations as ever in the palmy days. Yards and yards of crepe paper in orange and blue had- been twisted round the pilars, the Ughting was cleverly conceal- ed (no easy task with that, buse centre fitting), and along each side of the hall leafy bowers had been constructed. Also, the muddy steps between Bar and Theatre had been built over, and turned with the aid of flags into A long "tunnel-a great improve- ment.
