If Gossip We Must

ON BOARD THE EAGLE.

On Friday night we had the Eagle's: Christmas dance, a gilt- tering affair of daring dresses and brilliant uniforms. The whole ship was transformed in the most wonderful fashion and the decorations, were excellent. There: was a revolving fountain in the" hangar (where we danced), and a waterfall with coloured lights behind it. From the flying deck a ahute had been constructed on which the young and frivolous slid to their heart's content. But the triumph of the evening "was the arrival of Father Christmas heralded by a stentorian Britan- nia in a flood of doggerel. First came a patter of hoofs overhead; then two reindeer supped "down the shute, with Father Christmas riding most effectively behind, shedding novelties and toys from an enormous sack. THE QUESTS.

(There must have been at leastTM Ave hundred people present: practically all the socially-mind- ed of the Services turned up, and there was a sprinkling of civilians besides I saw the Commander-in- Chief with Lady Dreyer, and the Elliott. Commodore

MTS. and

Lady Peel was there, dressed in a beautiful black gown, and escort- ed by Captain Walters. Then I -noticed Colonel Bird and Mr. Owen-Hughes in their Volunteer uniforms, the former with his daughter Jean, in blue satin with curious twisted straps, and the

PENINSULA HOTEL.

The Peninsula Hotel was very quiet, but one party attracted my attention.

latter with his wife and sister.Eco and Mrs. R. Gordon,

An outstanding frock was- Mrs. Barry's, white crepe with a fas- cinating plum-coloured frill round the back and down one side. This was quite one of the most intriguing dresses in the room. THE YOUNGER SET

What a number of attractive

young

girls.. there are in the Colony this winter! And so many of them are present at a party such as this I saw the two Miss Hancocks, Rosamund wearing pale peach; the two Miss Fairs; the two Miss Boyds, Janet very sweet in a flowered chiffon, and her sister in belge with tou- ches of dark brown; the two Miss Simmons. silver straps: and the two: Miss Ritchies, the elder in white satin with a crimson cowl, and the younger in green georgette. Then there Was Miss Norah Hum- phreys, a new-comer to the Colony (and a welcome addition' to the staff of Messrs. Butterfield and Swire), wearing a sleek frock

Mrs. Hooper who is spending Christmas with her daughter and Mr. Charles Cumming is also on a visit.

Next the Hong Kong Hotel. Never have I seen such a crowd, the dance floor and lounge were both packed. I noticed Audrey Steel who was talking to Eve O'Hagen who looked very sweet in plak. Jean Mackie wore blue satin.

Mrs. Valentine in one of those new striped dresses. - Mrs. Comp- ton looked beautiful in black and silver. Ina Dunnett who is one of the prettiest girls wore a black dress which made her 'look fairer. than usual, Mary Whitham look-. ed very young in pale green. Mrs. Beck looked charming in blue.

I noticed a very cheerful party. Mrs, Hall chating to Mr. Taggart. She looked very nice in red and white Mrs. Black in red lace. Mrs. Taggart in green. Mrs. Tin-. son in white with a very fashion- able black and white feather boa. Mrs H in pale pink satin.

Mrs. Ronnie True in black. There were many others,

• Miss including Miss Tuxford Henry; the 'Misses' Hancock, Pa- mela Potter, and Arin Dodwell I think the two fair girls are very attractive. Betty looked sweet in beige georgette while Beryl wore blue, satin.

PEAK HOTELS

AT THE RUGGER MATCH.

A

the

most excellent "match be-" tween the Navy and the Club on Saturday: Although the Navy were leading all through, and as first it looked as they might have another walk-over, Club pulled themselves together so well at half time that they were almost able to equalise. The crowd cheered themselves hoarse, and the Club had some stalwart supporters among the lady hockey players. A strong contingent of these arrived, led Belby; Miss Churchill by Mrs. was there, with her two sisters, the Misses Barbara and Heather Hance; so was Miss Alwyn. Owen- Hughes; and after the match, I saw. Miss Bonnar and Miss Rose-.. mary King leaving in great state The in the Commodore's car. match was so exciting that I am afraid I almost forgot to study the spectators, but I do remem- ber thinking how smart Mrs. Ro- bin Gordon was with a tiny black hat and fur over her grey flannel costume, and Mrs. Croucher, with a short fur coat over a pale pink knitted suit, and a delightful matching tam o'shanter. Mrs. Gray, too, was looking exceeding ly nice ali in lack with me briefest of fur capes; and I liked the checked revers and cuffs on Mrs. Womack's suit of mut brown, and the little feather im her velvet hat. Mr. Pearsoni and Mrs. Whyte-Smith were to- gether, the former in a small- patterned brown tweed and the latter also in tweed, but of a mulberry red. Mr. and Mrs. Stopmanie-Thomson were inter- eated spectators. the latter in n prown knitted suit consisting of zigzag skirt and plain jersey, trimmed with circular bands of the skirt material, Miss Noreen Cooper was in brown, too, and again wearing that adorable. spotted eye-vel; and I saw the Boyd sisters, one in fawn and the other in royal blue, with, a small, grey hat. Miss Eileen Stubbing' hat was of bottle green, and fins-Joan Dowbiggin was in an almost lime-green costume of tweed.
