OBE., D.S.C., who has been one of the 1933 students at the Will Defence College, Imperial command the Durban, which has hitherto been Commodore's ship in South America, but is shortly to recommission for duty in the 3rd Cruiser Squadron, Mediter ranean. Captain the Hon. C. P. Hermon-Hodge. who was at the Senior Officers' Army School. Sheerness, is to command the Hastings in succession to Captain and as C. S. Sandford, O.B.E., Senior Officer of the Red Ben Sloops. He last commanded the Versatile and a destroyer division 1931-32. SPEED RECORD BY H.MS. ACHILLES

There appears to be no doubt that H.M.S. Achilles has establish- ed a world's record for long-dis- tance steaming at high speed by a warship of her class.

If the Achilles followed straight course from Gibraltar to Portland she traversed 1.100 nautical miles, and to cover this distance in 39 hours she had to maintain an average of 29 knots. or about 33 statute miles per hour. No man-of-war of corresponding tonnage has ever before approach- ed this fine achievement.

A few years ago the U.S.-air- craft-carrier Lexington covered

the 2,228 miles from San Diego (Cal) to Honolulu at an average of 30.7 knots, But whereas the Lexington is a ship of 33,000 tons with machinery of 180,000 h.p.. tony. .the Achilles is only 7,000

with engines of 12,000 h.p. Hex performance is, therefore, much the more remarkable of the two. The Achilles has proved her. self a faster ship than the Ger- man liner Bremen, the holder of the Atlantic blue Tiband. In March, 1930, the Bremen crossed from Cherbourg to New York (3,- 157 miles) at an average of 27.91 ots, which is more than a knot cruiser's less than the British

average between Gibraltar and Portland.

The post of Deputy Director of Naval Stores, which will become vacant on Feb. † next, when Mr. W. J. Gick succeeds Mr. J. W. L. Oliver as Director, will be filled by Mr. F. Weston, O.B.E., who has been Assistant Drector since April this year.

Mr.Weston entered the Ad- miralty as an assistant naval store ficer in 1897, and in 1908 went to Devenport. He was appointed Naval Store Omeet, Hongkong. In 1911, and at the outbreak of the
