- It's the mellowness of BOOTH'S Dry Gin that makes it so much to be desired in cocktails. Such mellowness comes outy from treble distillation and maturing in cherry casks and BOOTH'S DRY. is the only GIN which receives such care in its'mak.... ing. It is not to be wondered at that the 1st prize Cocktail in the Inter- national Cocktail Competition was made with Booth's Dry.

A WINNER REJOICES!

Didn't I tell you it is always safer to ignore" form and trust exclusively to hunches? It cër- tainly worked that way on Satur- day, for I collected over a hun- dred dollars,, and all on the wild- est of guesses. The Ewo Handi- cap brought me nothing, I'll ad- mit, but from then on the after- noon was marvellous-I backed Don, Fi Fe, Tillicum, and King's Parade for a win (and didn't they just!) and "Evening Star" for a place. Too bad my double didn't come off as well-I'd have had almost enough for a new car. (The baby Austin's getting a bit dilapidated; perhaps I'll treat her to a coat of paint next week. Just as well to spend my winnings while I can, or I'm sure to turn them into losses at Macao next Sunday!)

HONGKONG LOOKS UP

A SILHOUETTE OF CHINESE LADIES AT THE RACES

Frankie Stevenson's embroidered bishop sleeves of the palest pink made a wonderful context to the dead black of her hat and frock Miss Freda. Tuxford and Miss Pat Masters relied on contrast, too, the first all in "brown, with an orange scarf, and the second in ea black speckled material trim- med with gray für and slashes of scarlet. Then I saw Mrs. ''Hookey" Hall," "back" from her

Dozens of outstariding dresses at Happy Walley. Is it that this year's fashions are easy to wear, Or is Hongkong really beginning to take an interest in clothes at -- fast? Up to now we've had a well-deserved reputation for be- ing the worst dressed City. East of Suez, but no-one could make that criticism the crowd last Saturday. For colour, and line. the women rivalled the beauties of Bond Street on a spring morn- ing. And the men? No, I can hardly be sb Battering the best 1 сад say is that considering their suits may have to last them all of Ave years, they might look worst! (This does not apply to the Volunteers-the Scots band. was most excellexitly turned out and'a credit to everybody con- cerned. And the enthusiasm with which Mr. Morrison plped and Mr. Allison tapped his drum was marvellous to behold!)

A

PERFECTION IN PUNTERS

And now for fashion details; I see I have only one bride on my list, so she shall come Drst-Mr. Stopanie Thompson (formerly

Miss Elsie Mewis), wearing a fawn-coat over. her green frock, and a small dark brown hat. Also in fawn was Mrs, Sheldon, just back from home leave, with a little green feather in her ex- tremely smart hat. The most striking ensemble of all was worn by Miss Rosalie Alabaster-a trim tomato coloured coat-frock with upstanding epaulettes and a hard brown sailor hat, a com- bination that suited her to. per- fection. Another extremely well dressed pair were. Miss Eve O'Hagan and her mother, the former in emerald green and the latter" with a most attractive fringed cape and small turban navy blue and white. Miss Lois Fearon was wearing navy blue with a tle of spotted foulard, and Mrs. Leo Frost favoured the same colour scheme. I noticed her leading in Liberty Bay, both she. and her husband looking very pleased-even though they only earned us dividend often cental

YET MORE

Still I have not mentioned all the outstanding successes. Miss

ip to Japan, looking very chic in dark brown with a short fur coat. Mrs. Valentine was in. brown, too, but with a red velvet tam o'shanter instead of that delightful little tin helmet. I-re- marked on last time.. Mrs. Turn- er wore a yellow tie with her

·brown coat "and fur, Mrs. Way was in brown' from head to foot, and Mrs. Smithers: wofe: «' fawn tweed suit and hat. MiS, HATTI- son came down from: Canton specially for the risk and looks ed charming "all in black, with a soft fur collar Then reen pin- ters were Mrs. Bernard Brown,. wearing royal blue with a fawn bat, and her tall niece, another supporter

of the fashionable brown colouring so many people autumn. have adopted this

Among the crowd at tea I no- "ticed Mrs. Charles Bradley-in an.

AT THE HOTEL

What a rush Saturdays always are! I was no sooner home from

.

-

Happy Valley than I had to be dashing out again for the in- evitable "end-of-the-week dinner" party. Afterwards we went down to the Hongkong Hotel for the final appearance of the Spanish dancers. I thought it a pity that they gave us the Identical pro- "gramme we had had the week -before, good though it was, And why did they never appear again in those gorgeous costumes they Per- wore in the Rose Room? haps the Hongkong Hotel is a Or are we little draughtier? supposed to be more "respect- able" on this side of the har- bour?

A REVIEW OF" THE DANCERS

The 'floor was so crowded, that it was quite difficult to pick out individuals, but I seized the op- portunity of a tune I hate to sit out and take notes for you. Most " people were in evening dress this week in contrast to the varied costumes of the past month. Perhaps St. Andrew's

·Ball has made us realise how much nicer we look when" we

change? Or was it just coinci- dence? However, I must men- tlon just one afternoon frock that was really interesting-Miss Hopkins purple ensemble with the tiny pork-pie hat. I thought it suited her wonderfully well. And outstanding among the more formal dresses was one in black velvet and, gold tissue, worn by Mrs. Mulett, the elder of the Hazeland sisters, who is here on a visit from Manlis. Mrs. Crou- cher was, as usual, one of the best dressed women present, in a green frock with a band of diamante across (one "shoulder; and another attractive Ögure in their very international party was Mix Rolfe, tall and slender, in dark blue. Two other brides were noticeable," Mrs. Skinner (better known, perhaps, as Miss Iris Montgomery) with a "touch of black velvet op, her; white gowa, and Me harbour in blick velvet trimmed with diamante. ́ ́I „-saw Mrs. Wilkinson dancing, in

white with

a plaited shoulder strap; she look far too young to be the mother of agrOWN-UP daughter, but when I asked about the pretty girl in pluin colour, I was told quite definitely that she was Miss Wilkinson, Then there were, two most attractive visitors from Shanghai, Mrs. Dewhurst and her sister, Miss Lamb, the former in a new shade of red and the latter wearing greeny blue with a velvet coatee to match. Miss Margaret King was dancing. looking prettier than ever if a little sad, and I noticed Misa Thomas in a dashing scarlet satin with a belt of black velvet. Mrs. Atkinson was wearing wine colour, most decorative with her "fair hair, and Mrs. Parkes was in chiron, patterned with orange brown leaves.

KWANTI:

Did you go out to the opening Meet on Sunday? If so, you must have appreciated Mrs, Aleë | Potts' small son on an even smaller pony! I was so intrigued. that I almost forgot to notice the grown-up riders, but I vague ly remember seeing Miss Jacko Bonnar, Miss Pat Masters; the two Fair girls (had appropriate- ∙ly named!) and MissFearon. His Excellency was there with his A.D.C, and among the men I recognised Mr. Richardson and Mr. Yates of the South Wales Borderers, Doctors Macgown and Durran, Mr. Watson, Mr. Nigel, Mr, Cobrar and Mr. Don Evans. The trail was laid by Mr. Alec Potts (can one say "well and truly laid or is that reserved for foundation ceremonies?)
