The Prince of Wales had, I hear, a minute as toast-master at the

Society of Arts on Tuesday evening. It happened thus:

In a recent speech at Port-Art-and-Industry Dinner of the smouth, Lord Lloyd revealed as I suggested he would do-a signi- cant change in his attitude towards the National Government, Previously his principal critcisms have been confined to the Indian problem.

He has now made it clear that he sees very little good either in the policy or composition of the National Governmnt. The critic has turned opponent.

I learn that in the near future he intends to make a bold bid to obtain Conservative support for a move to discard the Liberal Nat- ionals and National Socialists, and adopt a new programme.

For this purpose offices have been taken in St. Stephen's House, Westminster. From these head quarters the generalissimo will plan and conduct his projected flanking manoeuvres, which will be described as a "forward progressive

movement."

ENGLISH ART AT NICE

The Directeur des Musees de Nice writes to tell me of his delight at Lord Duveen's loan of a mag- nificent Romney portrait of Lady Hamilton to the exhibition which is being organised at Nice next spring.

This exhibition will include only pictures and works of art of the English school between 1750 when the English "discovered" Nice- and 1900.

It is not known in exactly what quarter of the party Lord Lloyd. expects to find alles in his cam-among others paign. It is probable that he hopes to gain support from those who have been prominent in the activities of the Indie Defence League.

Mr. Thomas To Make Important Statement

London, Nov. 4.

Great importance is attached by both Great Britain and the Irish Free State to a statement to be. made by the Dominions Secretary, Mr. J. H. Thomas to-morrow, re- garding the future relations be- tween the Free State and the B- tish Empire.

Since Mr. Thomas, on Novem- ber. 14 defined the attitude of the British Government to the con- stitutional legislation then before the Free State Parliament-

The President of the Free State, Mr. Eamon De Valera has been in communication with the British Government and has ask- ed for an elucidation, of certain passages.

Mr. De Valera asked whether the Free State was free to choose without pressure or threat of ag- gressive hostility from the British Government, between membership of the British Commonwealth and a Republic.

The British Government regards the three Bills recently passed in the Free State Parliament as a clear indication of the intention to gradually eliminate the Crown from the Constitution..

It is realised that the elimina- tion of the Crown would definite- ty place the Free State outside

the Commonwealth.
