Nearly $5,000 Collected Yesterday

Although there were sill a few tins to be collected, the result of the Rose Day Drive for funds in aid of Hongkong's.. Poor met with very gratifying results, nearly 85,000 being col-

lected.

We have been requested by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to express their thanks to the ladies who helped in the sale of roses, those who took charge of the various districts and "everyone who helped to make this year's sale such a success.

CAPTAIN R. D. WALKER

To Be New Manager Of The Railway

We have been informed by the Colonial Secretariat that a tele- gram has been received from the Secretary of State fog, the Colonies to the affect that Capt. R D. Walker, M., District Engineer of the Federal States Railways has been selected to succeed Mr. R. Baker ay Manager and Chief En gineer

of the Kowloon-Canton Railway on his retirement next

year.

Capt. Walker served with dis tinction during the Great War and was appointed Assistant Engine of the F.M.B. Railways on Decem- ber 18, 1929, A few months later -on May 25, 1024-he received the thanks of the Government for service rendered in connection with the slips and washouts between, Sungei Tampian and Kuala Lum- pur. He was made District Bar gineer (Grade 1) in 1999 and the following year he went on study the leave to visit the Railways in United States. On April 30, 1932, Capt. Walker was made Boting secretary to the manager and chief engineer while early this year he was appointed Survey and Estate Officer.

Capt. Walker was born on Octo- ber 23, 1892 and was educated at Rochester, Mathematical School, Royal College of Science, London and City and Guilds Engineering College, London.

As is well-known in the Colony, Mr. Baker was appointed Assistant Engineer, Kowloon Canton Rail, way in 1908. Five years later he was made engineer of Ways and Works and

on August 1, 1999 he was appointed to his present post of manager and Chief engineer.

Home Opened Yesterday

At 6 o'clock last evening the arst applicant arrived at the head- quarters of the Street Sleepers Shelter Society at St. Peters Church, West Point to seek ad- mission. He was questioned as to his qualifications, medically, ex- amined, and duly admitted.

The man, it would appear, had been in Hongkong for sixteen years. He was an odd job coolie, who was down on his luck.
