AT THE BEACHES

What a way the temperature has of jumping up and down: Here I am in a jefsey again and feel- ing definitely chilly-whereas two days ago I was actually aunbath- ing at Repulse Bay and following. that up by a swim. It is maré vellous at the beaches now. Even over the weekends they are practically empty. On Sunday morning there were perhaps twenty people all told at Repulse Bay (picture it in midsummer, when one can hardly see the sand for bodies!), and those few were so well scattered that it waS ES good as having the place to one. self. The sea was a glorios blue, the sand clean and spark- ling, and the weather almost too good to be true." But was the water cold? I'll say it was! Br-r-r-r-r!

SHEKO

The week before we had spent all Sunday at Sheko... Here there were only three other visitors and they were way up the other end of the beach, so it was a grand opportunity for a little andism. But I regret to say our 'courage failed us--the distance from tent to sea looked too, wide

However, therer in Gabler where we we had a wonderful outbath andnormay here to travel by tram." got so roasted that it was almost ferry and rickshaw all in one possible to enjoy the iciness of the waves. There's one thing against swimming in this wea- ther, though. It makes me so hungry that it will cost, a 1ortune massage to counteract all those hard-boiled eggs and chick- en sandwiches.

PAINLESS EXTRACTION

Rejoice with me--I have found a new and easy way of losing money! At lasst, I thought I was going to make a fortune, but I came back minus twenty" dollars, and luckily there was noone else there that I could borrow from. in other words, I've been out to Shum Chun on a gambling expedition, and great fun it was, too. There was fan-

from sheer joy of living--because they love dancing rather because they are paid for it. I find them so exhilarating that It is almost impossible to mit myself to a staid foxtrot after wards I feel I need castanets of perhaps even a pair of silver Spurs! -

SATURDAY AT THE HOTEL

They were in good torm on Saturday night at Hongkong Hotel and were called back again and again by an enthusiastic crowd. Never have I seen the lounge so packed or 80 many strange faces. I have to confess that I can tell you hardly a single name, so I must be content with describing a few of the frocks These varied as usual from sim=" ple morning to "nitra-fashionable evening, and there were winners in each class. Among the sleeved, I liked, particularly a girl in dead black with a wide and formal white collar composed of layer upon layer of organdle. Then, with short puff sleeves, there was an attractive black and white

tani, moulette, and a man shaking dice. This looked easiest, but I didn't discover it till I had lost everything at roulette on an absolutely Infallible system, my dear!" and since they only give you back your train fare at the last possible moment, I decided to stick to the devil I did know- whereupon the two dollara follow- ed the rest. Some people seem to make money, though. There, Was an old Chinese at the table, with a colossal pile of hundred dollar chips before him, and even while we watched he put one on 26 and got back three thousand Ave hundred. Too easy! But the croupier didn't even blink; judging by the plle of notes in front of him I imagine he must have collected it all again long before the train left

Even in the smallest town at home it is not only possible to get the books you want, but you may actually choose them for yourselves. The Hongkong Club system is the most complicated and utterly useless. one I have ever come across. Even the men complain that the books are hard to find: I wish some of them would try to get one from the wo- man's room. It takeś - a good twenty minutes to make out a list from that enormous catalogue (couldn't they have a smaller ne. of, say, all additions during the last five years, and leave the rest to the few people who may wish to delve farther back?) and when the boy eventually saunters' 'along after another half hour or so, there is the inevitable re- mark "Sorry all out. Honestly, I don't believe they ever look!
