MEET MR: HOGAN,

This week I came across Mr. Ralph M. Hogan," secretary, for
the training work of
National Committee of the Y.M.C.A. in China, Mr. Hogan has recently visited Foochow, Amoy, and Swa- tow. By the time this appears in print, he will be in Canton where an all-day meeting "of Y.M.C.A workers has been planned for to- morrow." The different Y.M.C.A.
for In China are all looking ward to a big meeting to be held in Shanghai in January this year at St. John's Univer- the sity. Mr. C. T. Wang is Chairman of the preparatory committee and most of the lead ing workers in China have promis- ed to address the meeting, which will be a very representative one. The slogan recently adopted for the Chinese Y.M.C.A., it may be interesting to add, is Co-opera- tion for National Re-construc- tion." The whole "y" programme
in future will be based in that. dirction.
DR. "SHERWOOD EDDY,
Talking of Y.M.C.A. work, it is Interesting to mention that Dr. G. Sherwood Eddy is coming to the East in the autumn of 1934 Dr. Eddy has just brought out his book Challenge to Europe." As you may remember. Dr. Eddy is the author of "Challenge. to Russia," and I am informed he intends in out the near future to bring "Challenge to America."

SWATOW NOTES
Japanese Minister On Visit

For the Japanese community i was a red letter day on account t the passing through of Mr. Yotaru Sagimura, formerly Under-Secre tary in the League of Nations.

At two in the afternoon the bund was again cleared by the police with a large number of detectives. in attendance. The Mayor, Mr. Tek and his secretary and repre- sentatives of the Police Bureau then arrived to bid goodbye, to Mr. Sugimurs. At 2.30 two heavily guarded cars drew up. The Minis- ter, Mrs. Sugimura, the Japanese Consul and a Consular police off- cer alighted from the first car, for lowed by prominent members of the Japanese community from the second. After shaking hands the entire party took off in the launch "Swatow No. 1" with enough protection to hold a riot. At 3 p.m. the "Deli Maru" sailed for Amoy and Formosa.
It will be remembered that Mr. and Mrs. Yotaru Sugimuro passed through this port last Saturday on their way south, and completed the round trip to-day to return to Japan and Manchukuo via For-
One of these days there will be a serious traffic accident in Queen's Road unless something is done to lessen the traffic at the hours
when Hong Kong's two "principal theatres pour out their patrons on to Queen's, Road. The motor nuisance is very visible at 7-7.30 p.m. and again at 9-9.30 p.m., and while hundreds of people and. seeking to proceed eastwards or westwards, twice as many more cross Queen's Road to and their way to the ferries, trams and hotels. It is at this same moment that cars are driven down from D'Aguilar, Street by owners who have had them parked at either Stanley or Wyndham Streets and this exodus together with the ar- rival of many motor cars bringing fresh patrons to the theatre render

A SUGGESTION,
The traffic policemen do all they Ican and they have done their work well, but would it not be much better to do something that might lessen the traffic? If the parking places at Wellington Street and Stanley Street were to be closed to motorists say from 7-7.30 p.m. and again for half an hour from. 9-9.30 p.m.. would this not meet the situation, especially if motor cars arriving in the city between 7 and 7.30 and again between 9 and 9.30 could be allowed to park at Pedder Street? To close the parking places at Wellington and Stanley Streets would simply mean, that no one would be allowed to drive. cars into those parking places" at the times mentioned and no car would-be-allowed-to-leave. If then. cars parked in Pedder-Street could. be diverted towards Des Voeur Road instead of Queen's Road, the present congestion should be much lightened, since Queen's Road would then be free, for buses and through traffic only.
CAVALCADE!
This film which, was all the rage in Hong Kong a few months ago had a very good house at the Oriental, Theatre when it was put on during the week 'at popular prices. It may not be generally known that matinee prices at the Oriental are only 30, 20 and 10 cents, and need I add, the Theatre always enjoys a full house? The screening of "Cavalcade" at the Oriental, however, bring to mind the fact that this is the picture for which the highest price ($5) has ever been asked of a patron at a local cinema It is somewhat ironical to think that this is the very same picture which can to- day be seen for ten cents!
