Alexander Duft was born in Aberdeenshire in 1862, his father being the late Colonel James Duf of Knocklelth. Sir A. Duff was Director of the Mobilisation Divi- sion of the Admiralty War Staff 1911-14: Rear-Admiral, 4th Battle Squadron 1914-17: Director of Anti-Submarine Division 1917 and was promoted to the rank of Ad- miral in 1921. The late Mr. Blount, who at the time of his decease had reached the age of 85, entered the service of the Standard Life Assurance Company in 1891, coming to Shanghai in the year 1900 as Re- sident Secretary. "He was probably the first actually to be sent to the Far East in the interests of insur- ance. From the outset of his local career, he was held ja great esteem, both in his business capa-, city and socially. Mr. Blount re- turned to his Company's head office in Edinburgh in 1908 as general superintendent of foreign agencles, and two years later he was appointed agency manager, from which position he retired two years ago on reaching the age Mimit. During the course of his long service he had visited every one of the Company's branches with the exception of those, in Canada and the West Indies.
