H'KONG FIRE BRIGADE ANNUAL DISPLAY
Crowd Thrilled By "Davy" Fire Escape

was an object lesson. N
HOOK LADDER, COMPETITION
The large gathering of people in the streets and on the houses adjoining the compound, where the display was held, was thril ed by the Hook Ladder Competi- tion drill, where four crews, each of two men compete. The compel tition was in two parts, two
For the first time in its history, ❘ pressure of the portable fire pump the Hongkong Fire Brigade gave its annual display at the com- pound of the No. 2 Police Station, Wanchai, -instead of in the Com pound of the Ceutral Police Sta- tion. This choice of venue proved extremely fortunate, and the whole population of Wanchai, so it would appear, turned up to witness the very clever exhibition given by the fremen, who hand- led, hoses, ladders and. fire ex tinguishers with the proficiency which can only be
attained through months 01 training.
His Excellency, the Governor, accompanied by Lady Peal, the Hon. Mr. E.D.C, Wolle and Mrs. Wolfe were among the large ga- thering of Interested spectators. It is interesting to add that the Chief of the Canton Fire Brigade was also present at the exhibition. SKILLFUL HANDLING

crews taking part in each. Using hook ladders two men scale the "tower" and effect the rescue of one man by the "Davy" fre es- cape line after which the "Davy" ne is lowered to the ground and the firemen descend from the tow- er. There was very loud applause at the end of this exhibition, some of the more ignorant mem- bers of large crowd gaping at the use of the "Davy Fire escape:

The Picking Up" drill in which the firemen showed how an insen- sible person should be picked up and carried by means of the "fireman's lift" was an interest ing Item on the programme.
The final of the motor escape competition drill in which two crews compete, proved a very thrilling affair. The crew consists ed of two men each. The condi tions required the men to slip and pitch a fire escape to the third floor of a house and effect" the rescue of two persons by carrying them down. As well, it was re- quired that the hydrants were to be got to work into the first floor which was supposed to be where the fire had broken out. The pre cision with which the finalista carried out this competition and the little time they took over it was really frst rate.

The last item before the prizes were detributed was the District Call, in which five fire engines took part and worked as if they were attending a fire. This was the most spectacular part of the whole display.
GOVERNOR DISTRIBUTES
PRIZES
His Excellency the Governor was then called upon to give away the prizes, at the end of which the Fire Appliances drove past Gloucester Road, where His Ex- cellency took the salute. It was a first-rate afternoon's display, and Superintendent Brooks, was warm- y congratulated for the eficiency displayed by his men.

Before Mr. E. W. Hamilton. at Central Magistracy yesterday, Cheung Yung Fook, a partner of the Model Photo Supply Co. was charged with receiving a-camera valued at $240, knowing it to have been stolen from the Sincere Com- pany.
Detective Sergeant J. Fowlie ap- peared for the prosecution and the defendant was represented by Mr. Horace Lo.
According to Bergeant Fowlle, the camera was found in the de- fendant's shop for sale. When he asked the defendant where he had got it from, the latter told him that he bought it from a max named Leung for 842. He pro- duced a bill and an entry in the eash book to that effect.
An employee of the Sincere Company then gave evidence as to the identification of the camera, after which His Worship dismissed the case, saying that there was not enough evidence. The camera was an old one and out of order when purchased by the defendant, and the prosecution had failed to prove that the defendant exhibited in his shop other goods obtained from the same.channel He, now- ever, warned the defendant not to buy goods in future from per- sons he did not know, and order- ed the camera to be returned" to the Sincere. Company.
