This Capchi atrocity" has given rise to bad feeling against foreign- s on the part of the Chinese. The victims must elther be for the "Swallow" at Whampoa, or the French vessel in whose interests the late kidnapping at Ningpo" was in-

stigated. Governor Guimaraens is morally guilty and directly respon-t sible for all these atrocities. His specious declamations, his courtesy and unbanity have enabled him to explain matters satisfactorily to the representatives of the respec- Western powers, and the terms he has stood upon with the French Legation have given him powerful" advocates in that diplo matic corps to beguile the idle hours. which hung so heavily on their hands at Macao. We would simply ask any of the gentlemen of that legation for the following returns:-

The remarks within brackets are our estimates and may be of use to the Legation in making up the returns in case they should be puzzled about the ciphers as our contemporary was the other day when it made the export of tea from Amoy 30 millions odd."

BARRACKING!
(By "NOMAD.")
Even the most voracious cricketer should be satisfied when the in- terport matches are over. At the time of writing it looks very much as ir Hong Kong, after going" down to Malaya, will defeat Shang- hai and should this be the case, Shanghai will have to go all out to account for Malaya, in which .case the series will end in a draw,
with honours even all round,
It was good to see the interest displayed "by, the public on Batur- day Land their good-natured and subdued barracking added a spice of interest to the game. After all, caution in cricket can be overdone and when every player tries to be e stonewaller, the spectators are justified in making some form of protest, so long as keeps within bounds. No one can truthfully say that the players were put out by the barracking on Saturday or that it was out of place. As a matter of fact, at the time the barracking commenced, the cricket was exceptionally dull and tire- some and wanted shaking up. "The barracking did the trick!
FOOTBALL
With the charity football match fixed for Armistice Day, first division matches were played on Sumday. South China had an easy time at the expense of Recrelo, while in a thrilling match the Lincoln Regiment retained their position at the head of the league by beating the Athletics by four goals to three. The race for league leadership là the frst divi- alon is geting more and more in- teresting, and to date, the only undefeated teams are the Lincolns and South China, the former. having ten points and the latter eight. Last year the Chinese won everything in the football world, but so far this season: they have loat the Governor's Cup, and, with the Lincolns playing as well as at present, South China may find them a real stumbling block in their first division games.

THE SECONDS.

securing even a draw. That they wi Anish last in the league seem a foregone conclusion. Like their first "division team, the Lincolns are doing very well in the third division, where they have won all their seven matches-so far. The Borderers are close on their heels and these two milltary teams will be sure to make a great race of it this winter.
BOXING.
From all appearances, a very good programme is to be offered the public on December 2. at the 'Lee Theatre. The Hong Kong Boxing Association will be in a position to stage some good fights between men from H.M. Ships and from the Regiments. Some of the best naval men who may be seen in Hong Kong are Beaman Barry, Seaman Fraggott, Seaman Taylor, Seaman Halther and Tim Foley. Barry has held the Lightweight Championship of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines and is also Junior Welterweight Champion of China Fraggott also has an en- viable record, and we believe he has won, 100 out of the 170 bouts in which he has been engaged. Foley is the present Heavyweight Champion of the Colony while Taylor and Halthem are fighters of no mean calibre. We should be treated to an excellent programme on December 2, and it is to be hoped that nothing will cause a postponement of the opening date.
ATHLETICS.
The two-day sports meeting at Caroline Hill revealed that there is a large amount of talent among Chinese, athletes in the Colony. Some months ago, the idea was mooted of holding a joint athletic meeting in Hong Kong, in whitch representative from every Club could compete and as it is still early in the season it is to be hoped that those who are anxious to see the best athletes in the Colony appear at one meeting, will not overlook the importance of carrying out the preliminary ar rangements at an early date. The best time for an athletic meeting such as the one suggested, would be in March next year. If it is intended to hold such a meeting, announcement should be made at an early date so as to allow plenty of time for training.
The second division teams are somewhat erratic this season, and the Borderers bead the table with six wins out of seven games play ed, while South China have five victories out of six games." The rest of the Clubs competing have proved erratic and the results every week-end contain some sur- RACING. prizes. The defeat of the Club by the Navy by four goals to nil on The racing meeting on Saturday. the saddle, anything might hap- pen. Woodland Stag is not to be overlooked, especially since the is in tip-top condition at the mo- ment. Another candidate sure to command a lot of support is Night Star, and many people will not ac- cept his defeat in the St. Leger 23 Any criterion of his real capabilities. Then there is City of Brisbane, an admitted sprinter who will not be far behind. Müch will depend on the way the field is sent of, as anyone left with a bad start will not have a chance to pick up again. A short race with feld of classy sprinters is always worth watching and it is certain that no racing "fan" will miss his event.
SOME OTHER "TIFS”
Of the rest of the programme, it seems certain that Trentbridge will win the Grimins cup. Brechin will have a big task trying to win the Six Furlongs (Kent Handicap) carrying top 'weight. There are several good sprinters in this race, and surprises may come from Gold Key, Nike and Alexandra Hall. In fact the last-named," over six furlongs is a distinctly good pro- position. The "A" Division of the Suffolk handicap over a mulle should see Vigilance going to the posta hot favourite. Vigilance has been allotted 185 pounds, and this may prove to be a big factor against him. Adam and 'Festival Eve are in at comparatively com- fortable weights and should be very near indeed. I wonder who will win the "B" Class Australian race. Lucy Gutters from all accounts looks like the thing to back here, but there are two very good things" in Evening Star and Choice. The latter at 155 does not look bad at all
