ROYAL NAVY

Holiday Spirit At The K.C.C.

The Malaya-United Service time favourites like "Daisy Bell" metch was, as it should have been') and ""After The Ball," & game where everything".went of - with a holiday spirit-the spirit which adds to the enjoy ment' of a cricket match but which is 'very seldom present in matches played in Hongkong, no matter on what ground,

The SUA was" shining very

| brightly when the two captains went out to toss and its efforts to make everybody cheery were not without avall. R. N. Hamilton, the Malayan skipper, did not play on account of a bad finger while Willis also stood down, their places being taken by Billy Dean, their genial umpire, and Lewis. In the Services side, there was one alteration, Major Bonavia coming in for Archie Hamilton.

Peter Willams won, the toss, but for some reason" best known to himself, he sent Malaya in to bat, and to celebrate this, our visitors went and made 168 runs. A fea- ture of their innings. was the Alvis-Gill partnership which pro- duced 76 runs for the fourth

wicket. Gul WAS batting very well and brought off some splendid shots on" the of side. He made 32 while the baby of the team, Alvis, took 41 off the bowling be- fore getting his leg in front of a straight "un from Barnsby "and

was given marchingsözdera. Alvis played good cricket for his 41 and towards the end of his Innings, he made some first class shots, especially on the leg side."

For the Services, Garthwaite was, easily the best bowler and he. showed something of his real form, taking 5 wickets for 32 runs in 20 overs, six of which were maldens.

Services Collapse.

When the Services went in to bat, it proved a procession to and from the pavilion, Gill and Jonk.... lass opened the bowling and so well did they bowl that very soon. five wickets had fallen for a paltry 15 runs Only Sub. Lt. Sincial put up a show against them and even he did not get very many. for with his score at 23 he was out. Billy Dean bowled well, but pride of place must go to Gill on the day's play:

"

Els Excellency the General Offcer Commanding, Major Gen- eral O. C. Borrett and party were present for the greater part of the day, while the ladies also showed quite, a lot of interest in the pro- ceedings."

It was one of the folliest 14/15 5/15: 6/40: 7/41; 8/48: matches I ever saw here.
